The Dutch king and queen were in The Hague today to commemorate 100 years of general election law and voting rights. For this event, Queen Máxima repeated her natural straw hat with oversize brim. The flexible brim was placed, on this outing, in a tall, dramatic sidesweep on one side.
We’ve seen this hat numerous times- the only new view today is from behind, which shows the caramel Petersham ribbon hatband. It’s a versatile design that Queen Máxima wears well, although I wasn’t keen on the pairing of warm, toasty brown hat with cooler, pinky brown dress. The pieces are good on their own but together? Not so much.

Great hat, but agree that the colour combination doesn’t sing. I would have loved to see this hat paired with a more vividly coloured dress. This plain pinky beige one just doesn’t push back enough against the large expanse of plain straw. I like the smile, though.
Maxima has a knack of pulling off unexpected colour combinations, but I agree that this palette is not as successful as those of the 2017 and 2015 ensembles.
These bold simple hats look amazing paired with a dress that has a complex texture – embroidery, applique, heavy lace and the like – which can somehow make questions of colour combination take a back seat — but in this instance, the top of the dress lacks sufficient visual interest. The delicacy of the dress fabric is also an odd choice with the robust straw of this hat, especially when Max has a nearly identical hat in much finer straw. And where are the big statement earrings? the hat is perfect, it’s the rest of the outfit which could do with more oomph.
While the color combo doesn’t bother me, even if it doesn’t excite me, you are exactly right mcncln that this dress lacks the visual punch others in the past have had. And while her earrings aren’t big, they made a statement as they were beaded in the rainbow colors, and yesterday was IDAHOBIT (International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia, & Transphobia), and to me that was significant.
At any rate, it’s great to see this panama straw hat out again after two years in hiding, and happy 48th birthday Máxima! (as that was also yesterday)
Hi Jake, I didn’t know about IDAHOBIT day(the highest profile similar event in Australia would be the annual Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras fortnight); but I just looked it up and I’m impressed, particularly with their schools program. If Maxima was indicating her support for IDAHOBIT with her earrings, it was a very thoughtful gesture.
