Hat From the Past

Royal Hats to October 1, 1971 when Princess Anne donned this lime tassel-trimmed newsboy cap to present new colours to the first Battalion, Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment at Battlesbury Barracks. I’m at a loss for words on this one.

  1. Nothing wrong with this hat, in its day! Princess Anne was young and brought a new trendy look to her hats. These caps and newsboy hats were trendy. I recall actress Nerys Hughes wearing something similar (not green) on the TV show “The Liver Birds”.

  2. Thank you, Jimbo!

Of course this hat is dated, but the color and shape suits her. The tassel does serve to dilute the newsboy feature.

  3. Here’s a great video of Princess Anne opening the Erskine Bridge, spanning the River Clyde in Scotland, earlier that same year, in July of 1971.

The same hat was featured on the August, 1971 cover of “Chatelaine,” a Canadian women’s magazine.
