to October 1, 1971 when Princess Anne donned this lime tassel-trimmed newsboy cap to present new colours to the first Battalion, Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment at Battlesbury Barracks. I’m at a loss for words on this one.

I love it, great outfit all round.
Interesting possibility of a hat category of tassels maybe?
The shape, if not the tassels, persists. Here is the Duchess of Cambridge in a similar hat (though more informal) just a few years ago. See further down the page.

We’ve already discussed tassels! But yes- we’ll have to look at the newsboy shape in greater depth.
I suspected that. My memory! Thank you for the reminder! 🙂
It’s OK- even I forget what discussion topics have been covered! You can see an index here.
Nothing wrong with this hat, in its day! Princess Anne was young and brought a new trendy look to her hats. These caps and newsboy hats were trendy. I recall actress Nerys Hughes wearing something similar (not green) on the TV show “The Liver Birds”.
Thank you, Jimbo!
Of course this hat is dated, but the color and shape suits her. The tassel does serve to dilute the newsboy feature.
Here’s a great video of Princess Anne opening the Erskine Bridge, spanning the River Clyde in Scotland, earlier that same year, in July of 1971.
The same hat was featured on the August, 1971 cover of “Chatelaine,” a Canadian women’s magazine.
Curiouser and curiouser: the video shows that there are two tassels, stitched down to the cap. At about 8:28, it looks as though they are emerging from a seam, which is very strange.
That cover shows how voluminous the crown is!
HQ, three things:
1. When Anne was photographed at the June 15, 1971 Royal Ascot, a wondrous sheen was picked up. Could the hat be satin or silk?

2. I can’t help but comment on the other Chatelaine magazine articles. One topic answers the other. What happens to girls who leave home? They become nuns, kick the habit, get married, and have kids . . . it’s that simple.
3. I tried to figure out the event when Anne was photographed with her father, but to no avail.
I think we can be sure she’s still got this. How much would I love her to dig it out again!
I really hope she does!
She is so young and beautiful here that it looks great on her!
