Danish Queen Opens 2021 Cruise Season

Queen Margrethe kicked off the 2021 Cruise Season on Tuesday, boarding the Royal Yacht Dannebrog and sailing from the Port of Copenhagen to the sound of the cannons from the Sixtus Battery.

Amidst rough seas, the royal ship was welcomed by a cannon salute of 27 shots at Kronborg Castle in Elsinore.

For this first sail of the season, Queen Margrethe repeated her red felt cloche hat trimmed with a wide, dimensional, striped hatband that ties in a side bow. The pork pie shaped crown gives some variation and height to the shape which is more interesting than balanced, although the scale works well for Queen Margrethe. With her red cape, navy suit and dotted scarf, the hat tops a handsome nautical ensemble.

Yesterday, Queen Margrethe was in Humlebaek for the inauguration of a sculpture by artist Per Arnoldi to commemorate the flight of Danish Jews to Sweden in October 1943 during World War II. For this event, she repeated her mint green fabric-covered bumper hat with side split brim curling around pair of feathers. While usually see this hat worn with a matching suit and coat, cool weather mandated its pairing with this warmer ivory coat. The contrast works so well, letting the statement brooch and green hat stand out amidst the neutral tones of the rest of the ensemble.

    • I’m gonna guess it’s a brooch, since the same cream coat was worn for the opening of a new panda exhibit.

    • Definitely a brooch — if you look closely at the last (4th) photo in that gallery, you can see a faint shadow behind it.

Two wonderful outfits with beloved hats, and I recommend everyone put the Danish text from the Instagram posts through Google Translate for more details about the cruise.

  2. Two beautiful hats that look fantastic on the Queen. I also like her hand bags for both occasions.

  3. It is great to see two lovely hats with such beautiful colors at the beginning of our May hat musings! I absolutely adore the pairing of the mint hat with the winter white coat and that fabulous brooch! What a treat the weather provided for us there! The queen looks very happy to be going on her trip perhaps, all the more, because she had to forego this annual trip last year per the pandemic.

  4. Both hats are wonderful, and Queen Margrethe’s “bon vivant” exuberance is ever so clear with her ear-to-ear smile, especially in the video when she greets all the beautiful/handsome shipmates. To be honest, my sea legs were tested with the ship rolling in the waves, and the queen walking about with the wind whipping around her cape! It makes me proud to be 1/4 Danish!

  5. I kinda wish the red hat didn’t have that domed top on the crown since that adds height to an already tall hat, but I suppose where would the fun be in that? I do not remember ever seeing this one myself, and I’m glad for its return.

Grateful to see the mint hat back in fine form! It’s long been one of my favorite hats for Margrethe.

  6. The mint hat is a lovely color and shape I it very much. She looks very hearty and energetic in these pictures.

  7. I have read here for several years about the sailing season of the Danish Monarchy. While not directly hat related, I’d appreciate some background on this, even if only direction on where to continue my learning.

I do like the lines in the mint hat. Sculptural, and very flattering.

  8. I love that mint hat and I especially love it with the ivory coat and brooch. Swoon!!! Lovely to see QM out and about!
