The Swedish royal family welcomed German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife Elke Bedenbender yesterday for the start of a three-day state visit.
Queen Silvia repeated her white silk crepe covered calot hat with double stitched seams, black velvet flower and curled black feathers. The graphic trim still works so well on this hat, giving it a contemporary vibe that paired well with her black and white ensemble.

Elke Bedenbender’s smart red boater with tan binding and hatband deserves mention! The contrasting binding and hatband is a marvelous way to break up her all red ensemble.
Crown Princess Victoria wore a headpiece of palest apricot hued silk roses, placed above her chignon on the crown of her head. The design pairs well with her cafe au lait dress as does it’s placement, framing Victoria’s face from front view.

Princess Sofia topped a beautiful dotted dress with a black velvet braided bandeau headpiece. This ensemble also confronts the outdated rule that black and navy shouldn’t be worn together as the shades pair successfully here.

Royal Hats 
Great to see a state visit happening again, and interesting to notice the social distancing in the photo of the entire group (second from last photo), that only Sofia and Carl Philip seem to be standing apart. Mrs. Bedenbender does win the prize, and I particularly like (from a photography standpoint) those two Getty photos in the center that seem almost monochromatic except for Mrs. B’s red outfit and the military guy’s red beret. Queen Silvia’s and Princess Sofia’s hats are nice but undistinguished, and I do agree about Victoria’s headpiece framing her face nicely in the front view but when seen from the side possibly a little too flowery for a state visit.
I agree with my fellow J men commenters that Elke Büdenbender won the hattery stakes here. Gorgeous crimson color paired with great contrasting tan details, and the boater shape suits suits her very well.
Silvia looks sophisticated as always, but I knew right away this was a repeat from an opening of Parliament because of its “dress code”. Victoria and Sofia look fine, but nothing really stands out (although Victoria’s ensemble is better with the cream jacket).
I agree with JamesB and Jimbo that Silvia and Elke Bedenbender had the best looks. Victoria wears these floral headpieces well, but somehow this one seems more suited to a wedding or christening than a state occasion. I like that her hair is pulled back more softly than usual.
I think Silvia and Frau Bedenbender win the plaudits here. Silvia has done this smart suit with calot hat look so often and this is one of the best outings for it. And I love the red with the boater, very chic.
I like Victoria’s look without the oversized jacket, but the plonked headpiece is leaving me a bit cold. I do like Sophia’s polka dots though, but the headband is all a bit lost.
Most of all, it’s great to see state visits happening again!
It appears that the one non-Royal hat stole the show today. Elke’s red boater is a great hat for someone who probably doesn’t wear them often.
Queen Sophia’s ensemble, very chic and beautiful, was business-as-usual.
The two princesses’ ensembles were OK, but nothing to write home about.
As far as navy/black together, look at the RoyalAddicted_new Instagram 6th photo of the President and the Royal men/dignitaries wearing navy suits with polished black shoes, and behind him is a man (security?) wearing a navy suit and brown shoes. UGH! No comparison.
