Hat From the Past

Royal Hats to September 16, 1950. Prince George Valdemar of Denmark (eldest son of Prince Axel) married Anne, Viscountess Anson, daughter of the Hon. John Bowes-Lyon and Hon. Fenella Hepburn-Stuart-Forbes-Trefusis (yes, THOSE Bowes Lyons. Anne was a first cousin of Queen Elizabeth II). The ceremony at Glamis Castle saw the bride in a most wonderful calot hat with curled feather trim.

New portraits of the princess were released by the Norwegian monarchy to mark this occasion but, not surprisingly, without hats.

Prinsjesdag 2021

The Dutch parliamentary year officially opened today with the presentation of the government’s 2022 spending plans and a speech from King Willem-Alexander to members of the Senate and House of Representatives in the Grote Kerk in The Hague.

As for Prinsjesdag events in the past, court dress was observed by royals in attendance. Queen Máxima topped a her tailored blouse and ballgown skirt with a repeated a pleated tomato red calot/turban.

It’s a strong look for her, although the crisp pleats previously seen in this hat seem to have been lost since it’s initial two outings.

Princess Laurentien paired her silver and gold brocade gown with a circular headpiece of layered grey and gold sinamay that expanded in pillowed layers around one side of her head.

The shape is a great take and expansion on the bandeaux so popular at present and the design creates such beautiful movement around Laurentien’s face.

Designer: Eudia (Evelien Gentis-Smit). Gown by Hardies.
Previously Worn: This design is new

Battle Of Britain Anniversary Service

The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall attended a Service of Thanksgiving and Rededication at Westminster Abbey yesterday on the 81st anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

For this event, the Duchess repeated the pale aqua blue hat with parabuntal straw domed crown and sinamay sidesweeping wide brim she debuted at Ascot in June. The design is trimmed with a padded silk hatband and knotted bow at the side, secured with a blue covered button.

It’s a scale and style of hat we’ve seen often on Camilla and while it makes a beautifully proportioned statement of its own, it does not compete with the star of the ensemble (that coat!).
