Commonwealth Day Service 2024

Back on March 11th, members with of the British royal family attended the annual Commonwealth Service at Westminster Abbey.

Queen Camilla repeated a turquoise felt beret percher trimmed with a spray of diamond cut feathers.

I’ve not changed my mind on this hat- the colour is terrific on Camilla and the peacock feather trim is masterful, focusing in on the beautiful pattern of the feather while simultaneously, the sweep giving a grander scale to the hat.  So, so good.

Duchess of Edinburgh wore an ecru felt wide brimmed fedora trimmed with a slim black velvet hatband with double bow at the front.

It’s a bit bland for my taste and the slim hatband seems out of proportion and overly fussy. I’m just not keen on how the bow tails extend over the front of the brim, awkward pointers toward Sophie’s eyes.

Princess Anne repeated a muted teal sinamay hat with rounded crown and high, sidesweeping brim embellished with a darker teal slim silk hatband and curling, multi-looped straw bow interspersed with trimmed teal and burgundy feathers.

I was fortunate to see this hat closeup, in person last year at Royal Ascot and it is impeccably finished, beautifully balanced and the perferct proportion for Anne, who is very petite. It’s the styling of this ensemble, however, here that’s off for me, leaving me wonder if a  streamlined felt hat (mayube Anne’s red stacked felt beret?) would have been a better pairing for this patterned coat.

The Duchess of Gloucester wore an ivory felt beret with deep burgundy net veil overlay and an olive spray of feathers at the side.

Brigitte loves a beret and wears them well; this hat’s trim enlivens the design and the overall colour scheme between the hat and coat, while not perfectly matched, are close enough hues to coordinate very well. It’s a neutral look that’s far from boring and a much preferred pairing than the burgundy cloche she wore with coat at Christmas.

  1. I love this petrol teal beret for Camilla, but the more she wears it with this particular coat, the more I’m annoyed by their pairing; the color of this coat is far too blue in comparison to the green undertone of the hat IMO. I wish she would bring back the original checkered coat.

The only thing I like about Sophie’s ensemble is the shape of the fedora as I think it suits her quite well, but otherwise I’m not a fan.

I, for one, like the pairing of this hat with the bright red coat on Anne. The color of the hat pulls out the same shade in the details of the coat, and I like the overall color contrast that doesn’t clash for me. With so many royal ensembles being rather monochromatic, I applaud this!

I believe this beret on Birgitte was actually premiered during Christmas 2021 (same as Camilla’s hat), but at that time it was untrimmed. Assuming it is the same hat, I like the additional trim, especially the green feathers, as they add a little fun to this while still remaining a flattering hat on the Duchess. And it’s certainly a much improved choice over that odd cloche worn for New Year’s Eve Mattins service 2023. Brava!

  2. The black ribbons on Sophie’s hat with their precise placement look a bit like the Japanese sign for “heaven” – which doesn’t make it any prettier, I think. Anne’s hat looks too airy and light for the warm coat. My favourite is Camilla’s, so vibrant without exaggerating.

  3. DoGlo for the win. Anne’s is lovely but seems out of step with her coat. When the wind blows and we can see her dress below, the look appears more pulled together. DOE, nice color and shape, needs different trim.

  4. My favorite hat is worn by the Duchess of Gloucester. I like it’s shape as well as the netting and the delightful side decoration of the feathers. My least favorite is Sophie’s hat. The black ribbon detail at the front detracts from the hat.
