Hat From the Past

Royal Hats to this day, 20 years ago. We usually think about the Princess of Wales, Duchess of York or other ‘younger’ royals as ones who embraced the polka dot craze in the late 1980s and early 1990s. I adore that the Queen Mother got in on the trend as well.

This Week’s Extras

Royal Hats

Queen Margrethe attended a worship service at Holmen Church last Sunday which celebrated the 150th anniversary of the Danish Sømandskristians and International Crones. She wore her burgundy brimless hat with black trim.

The new millinery designs that jumped out at me this week:

Interesting fedora/homberg hybrid from Australian milliner Helen Kaminski for our beloved male readers
Smart black straw pillbox base cocktail hat with silk flower trim from Cessiah Alice Millinery
Bright orange fedora from Parisienne milliner Veronica Merucci Chapeaux
It takes a lot to make me notice a fascinator but Lisa Tan certainly did with this white layered design
Same for this stunningly beautiful but slightly bonkers floral headpiece from Australian brand Murley & Co. Millinery

And this season’s surging return of the boater continues with four wonderfully trimmed designs from Millinery by Mel

Danish Queen Presents Military Award

On Wednesday, Queen Margrethe awarded ‘The Queen’s Clock’ military award following a parade at The Royal Life Guard in Copenhagen. For this event, she wore a new bumper hat in spotted grey sealskin with a matching coat. As some of you have mentioned in the comments below, the pieces were gifted to Margrethe during her visit to Greenland in July 2015.

Points to Margrethe for wearing these gifts. The hat shape is not particularly successful in my mind- the crown is too pointed to be a true bumper and the black bow on the side seems completely at odds with the design.

Queen Visits Hull

Queen Elizabeth paid a day visit to Hull today where she opened a new medical facility and toured a renewable energy factory. For this day trip, she wore a new hat and coat in pale blue and grey wool.

The hat features a stepped crown, upswept brim, multi looped felt bow and spray of feathers. The use of grey felt on the upper side of the brim gives a lovely but subtle contrast to the ensemble; the addition of those three copper feathers, however, seems a little jarring in comparison. I suspect they tie into the print of the dress accompanying this coat, something we’ll have to wait and see to determine a final verdict.

A quick scan through Queen Elizabeth’s other pale blue and medium blue hats shows that a vast majority of designs in this colour range are summery, straw designs so this addition of a winter in felt hat makes sense. What do you think of it?

King’s Day 2017

Members of the Belgian royal family gathered today to commemorate Fête du Roi (Feast of the King, commonly referred to as “King’s Day”) celebrated each year on this day, the day of St. Leopold. The royal hat to appear today was on Princess Claire, who repeated a stylised grey trilby variation she first wore to this event in 2008.

The velvet felt design features an off-centre pinched crown and a short brim that faces downward around the entire hat (instead of turned up in the back, as a traditional trilby would be). It’s a simple piece that relies on shape to be memorable but one that Claire wears well. I particularly liked its styling with the rest of her ensemble today.
