Ascot Day 5: Wrap Up

I’ve waited all day for photos of today’s carriage procession to be released… no luck so far. If they become available, I’ll update this post! The only other noble head I spotted in a hat was Lady Alice Manners in a dramatic black straw wide brimmed bergère hat.

And finally, the following non-royal hats caught my eye at the races today:
Helen Mirren’s pink veiled straw perching pillbox with floral trim, the “Haze” design from Lock & Co.
British milliner Edwina Ibbotson in an aqua straw saucer with wrapping vine trim of her own design
Valerie Stark’s dramatic black Yves Saint Laurent upswept disc hat paired with a yellow dress
Felicity Kendal’s grey straw Jane Taylor hat trimmed in feathers & a net veil (see the back here)
Hermione Norris’ sleek cream Jane Taylor saucer with twisted bow detail
Shelby Tribble’s wide white straw upswept saucer by Sophie Hunter with lavish floral trim
Lizzie Hughes in Justine Bradley-Hill’s graphic black percher with birdcage veil and oversize flower trim
Lisa Gregg’s oversize blue saucer by Merve Bayindir with crin edge and delicate floral trim
Kelly Brook’s Philip Treacy percher hat with burgundy velvet base, silk flowers and birdcage veil
ITV’s Charlotte Hawkins in a cream straw Edwina Ibbotson design with mesh disk brim, bows and peach roses
Australian milliner Felicity Northeast in her own striking headpiece of concentric blue sinamay circles
And finally, PR excecutive Nazer Bullen, whose hats and ensembles have been absolutely stunning all week, with a wonderfully colourful and Rachel Trevor Morgan floral headpiece. This design just makes me happy.

And so we wrap up Royal Ascot for another year. Thank you to all the milliners whose work has thrilled us this week- your creativity, mastery and artistry leaves us royal hat admirers in awe.

Ascot Day 4: Chatto Family

Lady Sarah Chatto was at the races today along with her son, Arthur, and nephew, Charles, Viscount Linley. Lady Sarah repeated her cream straw saucer hat, pairing it with a characteristically classic and elegant cream pleated skirt, shell blouse and cardigan. Arthur and Charles looked very dapper in their black top hats.

Designer of Lady Sarah’s hat: Stephen Jones
Previously Worn: April 7, 2017;  June 21, 2014June 14, 2014June 5, 2012June 13, 2011June 12, 2011
If and when better photos are released (perhaps Daniel Chatto also attended?), I will update the post. This, I believe, concludes all of the royal hats we saw this week- we’ll wrap up a number of other memorable hats seen today in the next post.

Ascot Day 5: Peter & Autumn Phillips

Peter and Autumn Phillips attended the final day of racing today as well. Autumn stood out in the crowd in a bright pink dress and hat. With a teardrop shaped straw base, the design features a circular straw ruffle centered with a silk flower. A curling ostrich quill completes the design.

The first time we saw Autumn in this hat, it was worn with a green dress- a combination met with widespread approval. Today’s pairing with this pink frock ups the graphic impact of the ensemble- perhaps not something to do at the all-family royal events Autumn usually attends but that works really well for Ascot. Combining a bright hat and dress can be tricky but this ensemble is beautifully balanced with a neutral purse and shoes and minimal jewelry, which allows the hat’s statement to stand. I think it’s a great look for her.

Ascot Day 5: Queen Elizabeth

Queen Elizabeth attended the fifth and final day of Royal Ascot today in her fifth new hat, one I think might be the most interesting and unique design we’ve seen on her in a long time. Made of gray, white and green snakeskin printed straw, the design follows simple lines with a flat brim and upturned kettle brim that raises diagonally to form a short upsweep on one side. The hat is trimmed with a pouf of green and white ombre feathers tucked behind the front right side of the upturned brim.

I broke out in a great smile when I saw this hat, simply because it’s different than what we usually see on the Queen. I can’t think offhand of another printed straw hat in her wardrobe and its uniqueness is supported by its attractiveness. Is it the most exciting shape? No. Does it coordinate well with her bubble printed suit? I’m not convinced the slightly different shades of green on both pieces work together. But do I love the hat amidst these issues? YES! It’s such a departure for Her Majesty, I can’t help but embrace it.

Ascot Day 4: Wrap Up

Today’s royal carriage procession brought some wonderful hats. The Queen’s carriage was rounded out with John Warren and Peter Troughton, both who wore black silk top hats.

John Warren’s wife, Lady Carolyn Warren, was in the third carriage in a wide brimmed Philip Treacy hat with gently sideswet brim and angular crown, trimmed with a pleated hatband, feathers and a large cream silk rose.

Lady Carolyn was accompanied by William Wyatt, his wife and Lieutenant Colonel Charles Richards. Mrs. Wyatt wore a pink straw upswept saucer hat with pretty silk rose and cut feather trim. The men wore black top hats.

The second carriage carried Sir Nicholas and Lady Bacon and Edward and Sophie Tollmache (Edward is a godchild of the Prince of Wales). Lady Bacon wore a wonderful oversize grey silk covered pillbox, trimmed with a large white and aqua ombre ostrich feather pompom at the back. Sophie Tollmache topped her floral dress with a cream straw beret based percher hat with twisted bow

The final carriage included Nicholas Henderson (former British Ambassador and current chairman of the Prince’s Council of the Duchy of Cornwall) with his wife Mary and Lieutenant Colonel James Gaselee (Commanding Officer of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regimen) with his wife. Mrs. Gaselee wore a pink brimmed hat with flat crown, sideswept brim, pleated hatband and trimmings that included feathers, silk organza and looping bow tails. Mary Henderson wore a lovely blue straw saucer with a flat abacca silk looped bow and a cream rose.

UPDATE: Thanks to reader Grazia who tweeted this photo of Lady Margarita Armstrong-Jones, also at the races today. She looks to be wearing a black textured beret based percher very similar to this Stephen Jones design owned by Princess Eugenie.

And finally, a lot of brightly hued designs caught my eye races today:
Nicki Chapman in an orchid purple straw saucer with flowers and pleated crin. So pretty!
Jaw dropping scale and sweep on Belinda Strudwick’s oversize saucer (see front view here)
Beautiful shape on this bright pink brimmed hat from Irish brand Millinery By Mairéad
Nazer Bullen in William Chambers’ ice blue ostrich feather extraveganza
Rachel Trevor Morgan in a beautiful green saucer with clients in stunning pink and black hats
ITV’s Charlotte Hawkings in a gold button Layla Leigh Millinery percher with garnet floral trimCamila Carril’s classic blush pink straw picture hat with the loveliest curved brim
Tatiana Korsakova in a black button percher with bright yellow oversize flower and feathers
Clare Balding in a bright blue Rachel Trevor Morgan sidesweep with feathers & fuchsia edged loops
Michelle Dockery in a stunning raspberry flower trimmed Philip Treacy hat (gorgeous with her green dress)
This unnamed racegoer in a vibrant orange silk bandeau with floral trim from John Boyd
This sweet pair of racegoers in matching white, lime and navy dresses and adorable hats
And my favourite of the day, ITV’s Francesca Cumani in this beautifully embellished pink Jane Taylor saucer hat
I sign off with this amazing hat, trimmed by the wearer with a horse made out of a 1950’s vintage molecule chemistry set! This is creativity on a whole new level.
Were there any other hats that stood out to you at the races today?
