Crown Princess Mary Opens Garden Exhibition

On Tuesday, Crown Princess Mary opened a gardening exhibition in Copenhagen. For this event, which included her naming a new rose, she repeated her oatmeal straw picture hat with waved brim. A cream feather spray adorned the side of the hat- the same one we saw on its first outing (but not its second). I adore the use of detachable trim to give different endless possibilities to neutral hats such as this.

First Week of Danish Summer Cruise: Part 2

The first week of Queen Margrethe’s annual summer cruises aboard the Royal Yacht Dannebrog continued yesterday and today in Mariagerfjord.  After arriving in Hobro harbour yesterday, the queen visited an art exhibition, community activities and cultural centre, a robotics company and Maritime Cultural Center before returning to the harbour in time for choral concert performed by 600 schoolchildren. For these events, Queen Margrethe repeated her pink straw brimless bumper hat with domed crown and trio of white diagonal stripes across the front of the brim.

Today, Queen Margrethe travelled upriver to Mariager Harbor by royal barge where she visited Scandinavia’s largest plastics recycling facility, viewed more than 400 varieties of roses at Mariager Rose Garden, listened to an organ concert at Mariager Church and saw excavations at the Bronze age era burial mound Hohøj. For these events, the Danish queen repeated her vibrant pink straw hat with navy floral hatband and small white flowers at the side.

We often see Queen Margrethe in nautical navy or red for these summer cruise outings and the pink is a fresh and pretty departure. That’s my nice way of saying that I really, REALLY hope we see some new hats come into circulation for Queen Margrethe. The old ones are mighty familiar.

Danish Royals Honor Danish-French Commerce

Last night, Prince Joachim and Princess Marie attended the Danish-French Chamber of Commerce gala dinner where they presented the 2017 export awards. Guests at the gala were treated to a pre-dinner horse race and as such, were invited to wear ‘an interesting hat’. To meet this unusual gowns-and-hats dress code, Princess Marie wore a new percher hat with moulded base in apricot coloured straw, trimmed in a mass of peach and white feather and a net tulle back bow.

The scale of this hat is wonderful on petite Princess Marie and the frothy feather trim pairs well with the tiered floral skirt on her dress.

Such unusual dress codes call for a creative approach to dressing and this hat fits the bill. It will be interesting to see how Princess Marie styles it on its next outing. Now over to you, dear readers- what do you think of this peach percher?

Imperial Crown Prince Kicks Off Danish Visit

Crown Prince Naruhito arrived in Copenhagen airport yesterday for the start of a seven day visit to celebrate the 150th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Denmark and Japan this year. He was greeted at the airport by Crown Prince Frederick (he and Naruhito are patrons of the anniversary celebration) and Crown Princess Mary. For the welcome, the crown princess repeated her cream straw multi-looped straw bow fascinator studded in arrow trimmed feathers.

If one is going to wear a simple bow fascinator, this is certainly how to do it- with a beautiful dress that takes center stage and the fascinator recedes to the background. I know many of you loathe these pieces but I think the styling of this one is really beautiful. At an occasion that really didn’t call for a major hat, this hit the mark.

First Week of Danish Summer Cruise: Part 1

Queen Margrethe set sail Monday on the first week of her annual summer cruises aboard the Royal Yacht Dannebrog. Yesterday, she arrived in Kalundborg harbour for the start of a two day visit. After a welcome from the Royal Danish Life Guards, the Queen travelled by carriage to Bishop’s Palace for a reception; the rest of her day was filled with visits to a sports center, a volunteer-run hub of 62 social programs, and the lighthouse and museum and harbour in Røsnæs. For these events, she repeated her pale green bumper hat with curling detail and feathers on the side. This is undoubtedly one of Queen Margrethe’s best hats but we’ve seen it a lot and I’m ready for something new.

Today’s programme included visits to the local weaving association and nature and history interpretation center, the inauguration of a new heat pump at the power station and a rickshaw ride with cyclists from a local club. For these events, Queen Margrethe repeated her beige hat with inverted mixing bowl shaped crown and upturned kettle brim. There’s not much to say here except to quote a reader who once (now famously) commented, “That’s a whole lot of biscuit.” Indeed.
