Nordic heads of state arrived in Helsinki today to take part in official celebrations for the centenary of Finland’s independence. As is expected, the Scandinavian queens all wore hats.

Queen Margrethe of Denmark stood out in her repeated red bumper hat with navy floral bow at the side, a piece that coordinates well with her red coat and floral dress.

Queen Sonja of Norway repeated the hat, dress and coat she first wore for her and the King’s silver jubilee last year. The streamlined white straw hat features a flat crown and gently upswept brim that curves up around the back and is simply trimmed with a white hat band and slim cords of wired straw.

Queen Silvia of Sweden repeated the blue calot she first wore in February during the Canadian state visit. If you jump back to that post, you’ll see a better view of this blue felt moulded calot shape with widely woven net overlay and mixed feather trim on the side.

While we have seen each of these hats before, they are not greatly familiar (yet!) and today’s centenary gave us another opportunity to see them in action. Any thoughts about this trio of Nordic royal hats?

Swedish Royals Remember Baron Silfverschiöld

Members of the Swedish royal family gathered at Erska Church near Koberg Castle yesterday in to remember the life of Baron Niclas Silfverschiöld, husband of Princess Désirée, who died April 11, 2017 following a brief illness. As is to be expected at such events, the millinery was very simple. Queen Silvia wore a tall black pillbox hat.

Crown Princess Victoria repeated her black felt Yves Stain Laurent wide brimmed Garbo hat with fringe-edged bow at the back and wide Petersham ribbon hatband.

Princess Christina wore a large brimmed black hat with wide, ruched fabric hatband gathered in a large black buckle. Princess Désirée and the other Haga princesses did not wear hats.

The Danish and Norwegian royal families were represented by Princess Benedikte and Princess Märtha Louise. Princess Benedikte repeated her black hat with diagonally striped, raised bumper brim.

Princess Märtha Louise looked to have borrowed Princess Mette-Marit’s veiled black Jennifer Berh headpiece with slim headband base.

Princess Benedikte Returns To Royal Engagements

Princess Benedikte made a return to royal engagements on Sunday (following her husband, Prince Richard’s unexpected death), attending the Danish Osteoporosis Society’s anniversary in Aarhus. She wore a new hat for the event in royal purple straw, trimmed with a pink hatband and large grey and burgundy flower at the side. The flower looks to be the same one as has adorned her navy straw hat, leading me to suspect it is a removable embellishment- something Danish royal milliner Susanne Juul has done before. Princess Benedikte wears this shade of purple well and the combination of trim on the hat and her pale pink suit unexpectedly works.

Yesterday, Queen Margrethe, Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary sailed into Oslo aboard the Danish royal yacht Dannebrog. Queen Margrethe repeated the new navy hat with wide hatband we saw her debut on May 3.

Queen Margrethe Awards Colours & Boards Yacht

Queen Margrethe visited the Home Guard at Skive Barracks and the Citadel in Copenhagen yesterday to present two regiments with new colours. For these events, she repeated her vibrant turquoise hat with domed, indented Pork Pie style crown. I have long thought this hat’s success is due to its wide, darker blue velvet hatband which injects contrasting colour and texture to the otherwise one note ensemble. It’s amazing how a simple hatband can make such a difference.

Today, the Danish Queen boarded the royal yacht Dannebrog for the first time this season. She used the occasion to debut a new hat in navy felt with rounded crown, gently raised U-shaped brim and wide silk hatband with tied bow at the side. The neutral piece is a good addition to Margrethe’s hat closet and one we’ll undoubtedly see again during this year’s summer cruises.

Queen Margrethe Opens Aarhus Exhibition

Queen Margrethe was in Aarhus yesterday to open the exhibition “Aarhus Tells”. She wore a new hat or the event with a Pork Pie indented crown and gently curved brim made in the same plain wool as her suit. Printed hats are not for the faint of heart and while I admire the fashion chops required to carry off this design and find its jaunty shape rather fun, the combination of matching suit and hat is a few steps to far for my liking
