Princess Benedikte Opens International School Campus

On Tuesday, Princess Benedikte opened the new Nordhavn Campus of the Copenhagen International School. For this engagement, she repeated her purple wool hat with straight sided crown (with Pork Pie style indented dome) and cloche shaped bell brim, raised on one side. The simple purple hatband previously seen on this piece was overlaid with one printed with grey leopard spots, giving a hit of contrast and high impact pattern to the hat. Adding a new hatband was a simple change which gave immense new energy to this hat- I wonder why we don’t see these kinds of simple changes happen on royal millinery more often.

Crown Princess Mary Opens Jewellery Exhibition

Yesterday, Crown Princess Mary opened a jewellery exhibition at the Old Town Museum in Aarhus. For this event, she repeated her purple felt pillbox hat trimmed with curling feather detail at the side. It’s a classic piece that works so well on Mary, particularly in combination with other purple accessories and her 1950s silhouetted suit.

I love when a hat adds a pop of colour to an ensemble as this one did- what do you think of this hat yesterday?

Princess Benedikte Opens Leisure Trade Fair

Princess Benedikte was in Hannover, Germany yesterday to open Freizeitmesse ABF 2017, a large leisure trade fair with over 800 exhibitors offering products related to hobbies, gardening, travel and the like. For this event, she repeated a papakha hat in striking burgundy/purple faux fur.

The colour is not the only interesting design feature on this hat- you’ll note below that the faux fur is embedded on the left side with several rows of what looks like black leather ruffles. These ruffles have always perplexed me a little (what’s the point?) although I suppose they provide a bit of embellishment to a hat that does not lend itself to a flower or bow plonked on the side.

While these papakha style hats are obviously well suited to winter engagements (and faux fur really doesn’t lend itself to many other millinery shapes), I don’t always find them attractive. Princess Benedikte’s mix of grey suit and purple accessories works well to balance this piece and makes for a smart ensemble. What do you think of this purple furry hat?

Since this post was published, Princess Mary has added the following black hats:

8.

Designer: Susanne Juul
Introduced: October 2, 2018

I suspect the first three hats in this list are long retired, leaving four in current circulation. Numbers 4 and 5 are the workhorses as their streamlined designs fit in beautifully at the most sombre of events (and the recent addition of some new trim on calot #5 seems to have given it a new lease on life). Number 7 stormed onto the scene this year, easily claiming our pick for favourite new royal hat in May. The scale and exuberant shape of this piece sets it apart from Mary’s other black hats and it will be interesting to see how it is repeated in the future.

What designs stand out to you here, most?

Princess Mary Opens Emergency Hospital Wing

Crown Princess Mary opened the new emergency building at the Regional Hospital of Randers today. For this event, she repeated her grey felt casque hat with leaf trim. Her hairstylist always shows this hat off to great effect and its pairing today with her grey bouclé coat, black dress and burgundy gloves, clutch and shoes topped a beautifully styled ensemble.
