Royal Hats almost thirty-three years to June 17, 1986. Sarah Ferguson was a month away from becoming the Duchess of York and appeared at Ascot, with Prince Andrew, in a wonderfully graphic white, navy and green linen dress topped with a classic navy pillbox hat anchored on one of her dramatic 1980s updos.

Sarah was photographed that day speaking with the Queen Mother, whose bright pink capulet hat with silk hatband tied at the side and veil captures the quintessential millinery style she adopted for the final two decades of her life.

Ascot Hats From the Past

Royal Hats to 2002 and our final duet of foreign royals that joined in Ascot fun that year. The late Grand Duchess Josephine wore a classic ecru straw hat with a beautifully curved brim, trimmed simply with a silk organza hatband and side rosette (and I can’t omit mentioning Princess Anne’s ice blue straw hat with mushroom brim and ruched straw crown wrap). Grand Duchess Maria Teresa topped her blue suit with a matching straw hat with wide, upturned brim trimmed with a wide hatband and large flower. Unfortunately, Maria Teresa’s hat was a touch large for her, leaving it to sit unusually (and unflatteringly) low on her forehead.

Royal Hats twenty-two years back to the carriage procession into Royal Ascot on June 17, 1997. The late Princess Margaret wore a ruched toque hat overlaid in the same blue and white silk as her scarf while the Duchess of Gloucester sported some Puritan vibes in this peach straw hat with wide, flat brim and tall crown.

Ascot Hats From the Past

Royal Hats nearly thirty years to June 20, 1989 and Zara Tindall’s first Ascot appearance, with her mum. Zara’s natural straw hat, trimmed with a posy of flowers, is the perfect choice for an eight-year-old at the races and Princess Anne’s cream straw design with vented, raised brim at the back- well, it’s a stunner. The Princess Royal is well known for her fashion repeats across multiple decades and this is one hat I’d like to see trotted out again.
