Congratulations to British milliner Jane Taylor, who created this winning saucer hat, and to the other three milliners who designed these beautiful runners up. I can’t say I expected to see one of Princess Anne’s hats included in this list but such is the wonderful world of royal hat watching- there are surprises around every corner!

Duchess Attends Lord Carrington’s Memorial

The Duchess of Cornwall attended a service of thanksgiving for the life and work of former foreign secretary Lord Carrington this morning at Westminster Abbey. For this memorial, she repeated her large black black felt hat with flyaway raised brim edged in a wide band of bias-woven ribbon.

We saw this hat not so long ago- there’s not much to add except that the lines are still beautiful and sleek lack of trim gives such sophistication to the design. It’s all kinds of good.

Dutch Queen Opens Exhibition In Heerlen

Queen Máxima was in Heerlen today to open a new exhibition at the Schunk Museum. For this opening, she wore a new burgundy fedora described by the designer as “made of melusine felt in a pink mink color and trimmed with a fabric band matching her dress”.

The relaxed brim makes the design decidedly less formal, something that wouldn’t work for all outings but fits well with an art exhibition opening such as this. And let’s be honest- the hat is a supporting element to the statement necklace and its relative quietness makes the ensemble work. It’s not my favourite hat in Máxima’s millinery closet but it tops a good look on her here.

Danish Queen Celebrates Agricultural Society

It’s great to be back- thanks, all of you, for carrying on the royal hat conversation while I was indisposed!

Queen Margrethe attended the Royal Danish Agricultural Society’s 250th anniversary at Axelborg in Copenhagen yesterday. For this event, she repeated her scarlet wool felt hat with brim binding and layered hatbands in the same tweed as the ensemble’s matching skirt and jacket trim. It’s good to see this hat is in better nick than it appeared on its last outing and while it’s still on the side of tweed overkill for me, the layered hatbands, set off by that crisp black middle layer, work so well.

Ascot Hat From the Past

Royal Hatsto June 16, 1954, sixty-five years ago, when a young Queen Elizabeth appeared at Ascot in a saucer hat with fluted-edge crin brim and velvet crown. The star shape on the crown is a unique feature that sets it apart from all others- can you think of any other star shaped royal millinery?!

This hat ends this look back at past Ascot hats- I’ll be back tomorrow. If there are any other royal hats worn today, please share them in the comments below.
