British Royals Welcome Dutch State Visit

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima began a two-day state visit to Great Britain today with official welcomes first from the Dutch Ambassador in London, then from Queen Elizabeth, the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall. As she usually does, Queen Máxima kicked off the state visit with a new ensemble, this one topped with a sculpted bandeau headpiece.

The headpiece is covered in the same pale pink fabric studded with fine gold sequins as the mid section of her coat- a design feature that works thanks to the coat’s contrasting finely woven tweed on the top and skirt that breaks up the overall look.  I think this is the first bandeau we’ve seen on Queen Máxima and it is shown to great impact with her wonderful hairstyle and fantastic jewellery. The shape is a smart choice for this event- it’s chic, elegant and completely on-trend while the subtle colour palate keeps her from overshadowing her husband and Queen Elizabeth, the two true heads of state at this meetup. As much as I’d love to see Máxima in a more dramatic hat with this coat, this event really wasn’t the time to pull one out of the cupboard. I think this is some very well-played strategic, diplomatic dressing from Queen Máxima and her stylist.

Queen Elizabeth repeated her royal purple felt hat with square crown, upfolded kettle brim and dark purple velvet hatband, trimmed with silk irises and velvet leaves.

The connection between hat and coat remains a very good one and I adore how the velvet trim adds a luxurious contrast of colour and texture to both pieces. A conversation here last week about the usual placement of hat trim on the right side (from our view, the left!) balancing the ever-present brooch has me wishing, again, that the flower and leaf trim on this design was placed on the side but it’s a minor quibble that doesn’t take away how lovely the Queen looks in this shade of purple and how good the overall ensemble is on her.

The Duchess of Cornwall surprised in a new hat- I say surprised because the shape is so familiar (she has at least three others off the same hat block) it took me a while to realize this hat is not one we’ve seen before! In navy straw, the design features a wide, sidesweeping brim and angular crown with off-center peak, and is finished with large straw twists. The colour is lovely on Camilla and, like Queen Máxima’s pale pink, slightly muted her presence in group photos.  While the scale and shape of this have become very familiar, they make up her quintessential signature millinery look- a look which continues to suit her so very well.

While longtime reader JamesB predicted (hoped?!) in comments yesterday that the Queen would pay tribute to the House of Orange by wearing her new rust or orange hat, Buckingham Palace acknowledged that instead, a symbolic nod was paid through dessert at the following luncheon- a chocolate orange torte! Desserts aside, dearest readers, what do you think of this trio of royal hats in London today?

Sussexes Arrive In Fiji

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex continued their South Pacific tour today in Fiji where they will spend two and a half days before moving on to Tonga. For their arrival in Suva, the Duchess topped her white silk dress with a white sinamay percher hat with blocked base in the shape of a flat beret. The design is trimmed with white silk tulle, crin, widely woven net veil and a flat, rolled bow in the same straw as the hat with unfinished, frayed edges.

The white straw base has a faint metallic thread in its weave which shows beautiful luminosity and a faint sparkle in the photos taken at dusk. The shape and scale isn’t anything particularly memorable (we’ve seen it often before) but suits Meghan well but the colour is noteworthy for how beautifully it contrasts against her complexion and dark hair. I’m less enamored with the hat’s trim, which I suspect is a haute couture statement but to my eye, ends up looking a bit haphazard and messy.

I was surprised to see Meghan step off the plane today in a hat but it topped an elegant ensemble and is, undoubtedly, a classic enough design to be easily paired with another ensemble in the future. What do you think of this white percher hat today in Fiji?

Belgian Monarchs Arrive For Portuguese State Visit

King Philippe and Queen Mathilde arrived in Lisbon yesterday for the start of a three-day state visit to Portugal.

For the arrival, Queen Mathilde repeated her grey straw oval saucer with shallow, domed crown and straw twist trim. It remains a lovely hat on her, although I wish she placed it further forward on her head (as I suspect it is designed to be worn). Placement issues aside, the sleek lines of the hat are a great counterpoint for Queen Mathilde’s intricate lace coat and the pieces balance well together.

State visits usually bring out higher octane fashion and this hat did the trick well in Lisbon. What do you think of it here on its second outing?

Queen Catches Weekend Races at Ascot

Queen Elizabeth II attended the QIPCO British Champions Day at Ascot Racecourse on Saturday She appeared to be all smiles in her repeated blue and grey felt hat with stepped crown, upswept brim, multi looped felt bow and spray of blue and copper feathers.

She shape and scale oft his piece remains a great one on Her Majesty and the colour, while less saturated than many other blues we see her wear, is lovely, too. I’m still waiting for a peek of the ensemble’s dress (obscured completely again by her double breasted coat) to see how those copper feathers coordinate but even without this, it remains a great design for the Queen.

Hats From the Past

Royal Hats twenty-five years ago today and a pair of unusually similar hats worn by Queen Elizabeth in Cyprus. For her arrival (this was the 13th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting), she wore a vibrant pink Philip Somerville hat with upswept, side vented straw brim, crown covered in the same silk print as her dress and twee side bow.

Later in the day, she donned another Philip Somerville hat, this one in vibrant blue with the outer side of the brim covered in the same silk floral print as her dress and a bow at the back.

Am I the only one who finds the choice of such similar hats, both worn on the first day of a high profile overseas visit, a little odd?!
