Ascot 2024 Day 3: The Edinburghs

Ladies’ Day at Royal Ascot saw the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh in attendance, the Duke in his impeccable black antique silk top hat.

The Duchess wore a saucer hat in layered dusky pink pinokpok and lighter pink sinamay. The underside of the raised brim is trimmed with draped organza in similar shades of muted pink.

The shape of the saucer is great, as is the colour on Sophie. I’m less keen on the organza trim and would have chosen a hat in a different colour to pair with this dress.

Ascot 2024 Day 2: The Edinburghs

The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh celebrated their 25th wedding today at Royal Ascot! The Duke repeated his black antique silk top hat (still the most gleaming one in the family)

The Duchess wore a white sinamay hat with dramatically extended brim on one side, trimmed with a slim sinamay hatband and large white crin swirled flower.

It’s a romantic choice, perhaps an anniversary statement? I’m neither a fan of the parts- the pale colour lessens the hat’s impact, as does it’s lack detail and the less I say about the dress, the better- nor do I like the overall look, which reads ‘historically inaccurate Edwardian costume.”

The standout piece here, for me, is the Duke’s tie, printed with jockey silks and saddles! What are your thoughts?

Garter Service 2024

Members of the British royal family and distinguished guests gathered today at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor, for the annual Garter Service. This service, which celebrates The Order of the Garter (the highest order of chivalry and one of the most prestigious honours in the United Kingdom awarded at the Sovereign’s pleasure as a personal gift) dates back to 1348 and remains a highlight on the royal calendar each year. Current members include the King and Queen, Prince of Wales, Princess Royal, Duke of Edinburgh, and Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, who all attended in Garter robes with the Order’s distinctive black velvet hat with ostrich feather plume.

The Duchess of Edinburgh repeated a hat described by its milliner as, “A bespoke hand dyed, two tone style disc, trimmed with bows.” The pink window pane sinamay brim extension on this saucer gives such lightness and lift to the design, as does its pairing with this floral dress.

Thoughts about these hats toady in rainy London?
