Kent Wedding at Windsor

Lady Gabriella Windsor was married to Mr. Thomas Kingston today at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle.

The bride looked radiantly beautiful in a lace dress by Italian designer Luisa Beccaria. Beccaria was quoted this morning, โ€œIn the very beginning, she didn’t even really want a white dress. Her requirements changed a little bit when they decided to marry at Windsor.โ€

The resulting gown was made from fine layers of tulle and organza- ivory layered with a few in blush pink to give the slightest kiss of colour- with an overlay of ivory embellished Valenciennes lace.

The lace is appliqued with silk ribbon swirls and flowers with a row roses highlighting the waist. The shape follows a sheer bateau neckline and long sleeves with the A-line skirt that sweeps into a beautiful train.

Lady Gabriella wore a tiara that has is becoming a Kent family bridal tradition. Gifted to her grandmother, Princess Marina on the occasion of her wedding to the Duke of Kent, the Kent City of London Fringe Tiara was worn by Princess Alexandra at her wedding in 1963 and by Gabriella’s mother, Princess Michael of Kent at her wedding ball in 1978.

The spiky lines of the Kokoshnik shaped tiara were softened by a sweeping cathedral length silk tulle veil, edged around the front with the same Valenciennes lace that adorned the gown. Applique cutouts of the lace dotted the back of the veil with little blossoms and Gabriella’s hair was fixed in a romantic cascade of curls and looping braids.

The couple were attended by pages and bridesmaids, including Gabriella’s nieces Maud and Isabella, in ivory silk organza dresses also by Luisa Beccaria. The same silk ribbon floral applique on the waist of the bride’s dress trimmed the waists and short sleeves of the bridesmaids’ frocks and wreaths of ivory and peach roses adorned their hair.

From the couple’s radiant smiles, it appears the day was everything they had hoped and I’m sure you join me in wishing them congratulations and wishes for a wonderful life together.

York Royal Wedding: Gloucesters and Kents

We turn our attention now to hats worn by members of the Gloucester and Kent families. First up is a millinery disguise of sorts from the Duchess of Gloucester who repeated her much worn straw taupe blocked beret hat (with stem). The hat is a familiar one and its outing today, wrapped in a swath of red net veil (I assume, to coordinate with her suit?) is unexpected and, dare I say, a bit odd. I love millinery experiments but in this case, I think thisย  would have been best left in its original form.

Zenouska Mowatt topped her bright pink midi length dress with a dark purple felt hat trimmed with an organza ruffle in the same pink as her dress. The colour mix of this ensemble is unexpected but the more I see it, the more I really like it. It’s a brave combinations of colours and materials not usually put together and makes a bold and very brave look for Zenouska.

Lady Gabriella Windsor was a vision in blue, topping her cereulean dress with a deep peacock(or cobalt?) felt hat with off-centered, peaked crown and gently sideswept brim. The shades of blue are not ones often paired together but, like Zenouska’s ensemble, work surprisingly really well. The turquoise earrings and pale blue clutch add other blue notes to the ensemble that contrast (rather than match), making for an interesting and unexpected ensemble that Gabriella wears, brilliantly. Hers is the next British royal wedding and I can’t wait to see her bridal style.

Ascot Day 3: Kent Family

The Kent family was represented at the races today by Zenouska Mowatt and Lady Gabriella Windsor. Zenouska topped her printed black dress with a very smart black straw boater hat. The hat is trimmed with a wide Petersham ribbon hatband and a sprinkling of gold flowers with faux pearl centers. The medium sized hat is a perfect scale on petite Zenouska and made a perfect topper for her fun dress.

Lady Gabriella Windsor topped her bright yellow dress with an unexpected, vibrant pink hat trimmed with exuberant pink straw and crin twists. The hat’s shape, with sideswept brim and angular crown with off-center peak, is one we’re becoming familiar with this season- Lady Gabriella has worn several similar designs that she always carries well. It’s the colour of this hat, however, that really stands out, especially in combination with her yellow dress. If any better photos are released, I’ll update this post (please share links in the comments!)

Trooping The Colour: Gloucester & Kent Families

We conclude our look at the hats seen Saturday for Trooping the Colour with those worn by members of the Gloucester and Kent families. It’s always wonderful to see the Duchess of Kent at this event and rather disappointing there is not a better view of her hat to share. It looks to be a lavender pillbox, likely in straw, trimmed with a large spray of face-framing feathers on the side.

June 9, 2018 | Royal Hats

UPDATE- thanks to avid royal watcher and photographer Paul Ratcliffe for sharing this photo of the Duchess, just for us! This view confirms her hat is a high lavender textured straw bandeau, with feather trim framing the right side of her face. The colour is lovely on Katharine and the bandeau style suits her bobbed haircut really well. It’s a fresh and modern headpiece that proves cutting edge style is possible at any age!

Lady Helen Taylor repeated the white homberg crowned ht with upswept brim and navy bow trim we saw her wear to this event last year, with an added red and fuchsia hued silk flower on the front of the hat. The addition of this flower transforms the hat (hiding the distinctive crown shape makes it appear to be a different style) and firmly ties the colour palate to Helen’s fuchsia printed dress. Seeing this transformation makes me wonder why we don’t see such minor millinery renovations on more royal hats! Helen’s sister-in-law, Lady Nicholas Windsor, wore a dusky pink straw button based percher hat trimmed with large silk roses and dotted net tulle veil.

While Princess Alexandra and the Duchess of Gloucester were in attendance, they did not appear in any photographs.

UPDATE-ย Again, avid royal watcher and photographer Paul Ratcliffe comes to our rescue! My deepest thanks to Paul for posting these photos just for our benefit! Princess Alexandra repeatedย her dove grey straw with tall, flat crown and cartwheel brim trimmed with a large straw knotted bow and a swath of dotted net tulle overlaying the hat’s brim. The Duchess of Gloucester repeated her black pillbox with new addition of a black tulle veil.

Julia Ogilvy, who recently graduated from the Harvard Divinity School, paired her dotted grey dress with a tall grey straw stovepipe hat with cartwheel brim trimmed with an exquisite spray of straw roses and leaves. Flora Ogilvy repeated the wide brimmed cream straw picture hat with square crown and large, layered side bow that she seems to have permanently appropriated from her mother’s millinery closet! And no wonder, as it’s a wonderful, classic and clearly versatile hat.

Zenouska Mowatt topped her vibrant pink, lilac, orange and white patterned dress with a textured white straw beret percher hat trimmed with curling white feathers and a pink and orange straw knotted flying bow. There’s a lot of texture going on in this piece and while I really like its idiosyncratic creativity, I’m not convinced it complements or relates enough with the dress to work well together.

Princess Michael of Kent used the occasion toย dรฉbut a new hat. In almond straw, the design features a flat crown and wide, cartwheel brim and is simply trimmed with a wide straw hatband. Marie-Christine favours dramatic millinery statements and this one feels surprisingly sedate and traditional for her. It’s another versatile piece I think we’ll see again many times in years to come.ย

Lady Frederick Windsor topped her beautifully cut suit with an ecru straw vertical saucer hat trimmed with a cream feather lotus flower and slim, curling straw tails. The steep diagonal lines of the hat work so well with the similar line on the hem of Sophie’s jacket. This is not a hat I’d be drawn to on its own but with this suit, forms a really lovely ensemble.

Lady Gabriella Windsor wore a cream straw hat with angular crown and gently sideswept brim, trimmed with straw twists and a handful of white silk sweet peas. It’s a style, scale and colour of hat we’ve seen often on Gabriella but one that she carries so well. The open neck of her blue coat dress is a particularly effective compliment to the lines of the hat and the two pieces join to create a beautifully balanced look.

Phillips Wedding, Ten Years On: The Hats

ย  After looking at the gowns and headpieces worn by the bride and attendants at the wedding of Peter and Autumn Phillips, ten years ago this week, we now turn our attention to the hats worn by the couple’s family.

Queen Elizabeth followed the same fashion approach she took nine years earlier at the Earl and Countess of Wessex’s weddingย (also held at St. George’s chapel), opting for a feathered headpiece instead of a hat. Her bandeau of grey and bronze feathers pulled out the hues in her matching lace trimmed coat and gown.

Princess Anne also opted for a fascinator and topped her chocolate dress and ivory brocade jacket with a feather spray in the same hues tucked behind her right ear. Autumn’s grandmothersย are also pictured in the photo below- her paternal grandmother Mrs. Ivy Kelly wore a black hat with white hatband while her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Edith McCarthy wore a stylish design with cream sideswept brim and burgundy crown.

The bride’s Kathleen Magas, wore a wide brimmed white crin hat trimmed with a large ruffle anchored with a pale blue hatband in the same shade as her suit.

The Duchess of Cornwall wore one of her signature Philip Treacy curving bandeau feathered headresses in pale blue arrow trimmed feathers.

Princess Beatrice wore perhaps the most memorable piece of millinery at this event, a statement Philip Treacy fascinatorย  of multicoloured monarch butterflies. Princess Eugenie also wore a Philip Treacy creation, a taupe metallic straw disc percher hat with gravity defying knotted bow.

The Countess of Wessex did not appear on the front steps of St. George’s Chapel following the ceremony but is spotted at the front right of the group photo below- she wore the same large fascinator of grey silk roses, rings and feathers by Philip Treacyย that she wore to Ascot a month later.

Viscountess Linley, as was her title at the time, followed the fascinator craze with another large piece from Philip Treacy in pale grey and taupe feathers.

The Gloucester family was represented by the three Gloucester children and their familes. The Countess of Ulster, in the top right of the first photo below, wore a wore a turquoise headpiece.Lady Rose Gilman (scroll to the second photo) wore a large headpiece of black and cream silk roses that I would have preferred placed over her eyebrow instead of the side of her head. Lady Davina (scroll to third photo) topped her blue coat with a pleated silver grey hat on a cap-style base base (interestingly, her sister Rose would wear a very similar hat three years later to William and Kate’s wedding).

Lord Frederick and Lady Gabriella Windsor represented the Kent branch of the family. Gabriella’s silver metallic button base cocktail hat, also by Philip Treacy, was trimmed with a large grey silk cabbage rose and sprays of grey silk leaves.

While not yet a member of the royal family, Catherine Middleton attended the wedding (William was away in Africa at another wedding) in a black bumper cocktail hat with straw twist andย  black tulle veil.

Looking back at these hats, I’m reminded how, in 2008, fascinators were at the height of popularity. The hats and headpieces at Peter and Autumn’s wedding reflect this trend and the relative informality of the event, which will be noticeably lower key than this weekend’s upcoming wedding. Looking back, which hats stand out to you most? Which hats have stood the test of ten years of changing fashion?
