Romanian National Day 2019

On Friday, members of the Romanian royal family celebrated their country’s national holiday as they have in the past, hosting a garden party for 3000 guests at Elisabeta Palace.

A palace garden party usually includes hats and such was the case in Bucharest. Custodian of the Crown, Her Majesty Margareta wore an ecru straw teardrop shaped sauce with high upsweep, the underside of which is trimmed with an oversize red silk flower. The flower feels slightly out of proportion (trimmed back just slightly, I think, would do the trick) although it makes a dramatic and festive statement that fits this occasion well.

Princess Maria wore a similarly shaped disk hat in blush beige-pink straw, trimmed with coque and goose feathers in the same pink and varied shades of blue. The colour scheme is a bit unexpected but works, particularly in combination with Maria’s beige-pink silk dress and navy coat.

Princess Sophie topped her peacock blue silk dress with a beige straw sidesweep saucer hat trimmed in vibrant blue goose and arrow trimmed coque feathers. I suspect the hat was placed to coincide with Sophie’s hairstyle but I wish it was pivoted slightly forward with the top of the hat angled slightly lower to sweep across her face instead of hover behind it.  Princess Elena paired her emerald silk suit with a deep eggplant hued straw saucer, also trimmed in goose and pointed coque feathers. The purple and green scheme is a brave one- I just wish the green feathers were a better match for the jacket, the purple straw base was larger and, like her sister, the hat was worn at a less severely upright angle.

It’s always lovely to see the Romanian royal sisters at this annual event and I wonder- do you think their quartet of saucer sidesweeps was a coincidence this year?!

Romanian Royals Celebrate National Day

Members of the Romanian Royal Family took part in events to celebrate their country’s National Holiday today, including an annual Garden Party hosted at Elisabeta Palace.

Her Majesty Margareta, Custodian of the Crown, topped her pale pink dress and jacket with a matching boater hat. The straw of the hat appears to be woven in a lace-like design, giving interesting texture to the piece and the hat is trimmed with a feather spray on the side. The different textures between the hat, dress and jacket are a great example of balanced monochrome dressing although I wish Margareta hadn’t worn the hat so far back on her head.

Margareta was joined by her sisters, Princess Elena and Princess Maria. Elena wore a cream straw saucer hat trimmed with cream, black and fuchsia feathers and long quills that linked with the bright print of her dress. Princess Marie wore a teal design with upturned brim overlaid with lace applique in the same colour.

Members of the Romanian royal family donned black hats for a ceremony last weekend at Curtea de Arges monastery to mark 40 days since death of King Michael.

The following new millinery designs caught my eye this week:

The prettiest floral trimmed white straw boater from Aussie brand Millinery By Mel
Fantastic feather work on this navy straw upsweep saucer from Rosie Olivia SS 2018
Dramatic black lace covered button percher with feathers by Brisbane based Marilyn Van den Berg
Amazing royal blue dotted pyramid hat by Irish brand Martha Lynnn Millinery
Flames of pink straw embellish this marvelous cocktail hat from British milliner Lisa Tan
And a grey wool bear hat eating a salmon from the astoundingly creative mind of Stephen Jones

I have long thought of handmade millinery as wearable art- just look at the hand sewn detail on this embellished button percher from German brand Coquette Hats.

Romanian Royals Host Garden Party

As part of Romanian National Day celebrations on Wednesday, members of the Romanian royal family hosted an annual Garden Party  at the Elisabeta Palace. Crown Princess Margareta wore a pale grey straw hat with square, peaked crown and raised brim around the back. The hat’s crown is embellished in lace appliqué cutouts in the same hues of blue and green as are on her printed dress. It’s an interesting use of a trim we don’t see often on royal hats that worked well with the ensemble once Princess Margarita added her blue coat.

Princess Maria updated a hat she wore to this event two years ago, replacing a bright pink hatband, bow and flower with a hatband in the same floral print as her dress. The white straw hat with pink edged kettle brim is further embellished with green silk leaves and a large curling bow. While the new trim feels a bit of a jumble, I’m inclined to give it a pass simply because it’s an attempt at millinery recycling, something we don’t often see.

Romanian Royals Celebrate Crown

On Tuesday, members of the Romanian royal family celebrated the 150th anniversary of the Romanian crown with events held in Bucharest and Sinaia. The day’s events included a military ceremony, garden party and outdoor concert, and the first raising of the royal standard at Peleș Royal Castle since 1947. While King Michael’s health prevented his attendance, the Romanian princesses all joined in the celebration.

Crown Princess Margareta wore a turquoise straw hat with wide brim designed by Romanian designer Kristina Dragomir. Its placement, far back on her head, allowed the appliqué lace flowers flowers and leaves on the underside of the brim to frame her face. A wide twist of pleated purple straw placed on the other side of the brim further trimmed the hat and tied into Margareta’s other purple accessories. The hat is a fantastic colour on her and the appliqué detail is a lovely touch we don’t often see. I’m just not sure about the jarring purple twist.

Princess Elena topped her red dress and coat in a small straw percher hat trimmed with flowers and curling straw ribbons. I thought the design was a wonderful compliment to her hairstyle and the natural straw a good counterpoint to her vibrant ensemble.

Princess Sophia paired her apricot dress and jacket with a small cream straw hat trimmed with white and brown feathers and a cream bow. The scale of the piece feels a little small for Sophia although the jaunty angle she wore the piece is great fun.

Princess Maria wore a large, white straw picture hat. The short crown of this piece is wrapped in a royal blue ribbon thied in a huge side bow and the hat is further embellished with multiple loops and bows of white organdie. It’s a nice enough piece that I think could have been elevated greatly if she had tilted it forward on her head.

Archduchess Maria-Magdalena of Austria (King Michael’s niece) joined in the festivities in a large black straw hat. Trimmed in a sash of diagonal black and white stripes around the crown, the focus of the piece is a wreath of large black straw leaves placed on top of the mushroom brim. Such sculpture with straw is not something we see often and the design was certainly unique.
