Danish Opening of Parliament

The Danish Royal Family gathered together yesterday in Copenhagen to witness the official opening of Parliament. Queen Margrethe led her family at this annual event with a repeat of her red felt hat trimmed in bands of the same tweed as her suit. While it’s a serviceable enough working ensemble and Margrethe wears such classic millinery shapes well, I was disappointed not to see a new hat for the Queen at this high profile event.

Crown Princess Mary set off a beautiful silver lace pencil skit with a black tunic, accessories and her much worn black felt calot hat. In an unexpected move, she added new life to the piece with spray of large felt leaves and feathers added to the side. It’s a brilliant move to rejuvenate an old hat and I thought the piece was elevated by the addition.

Princess Marie repeated the purple felt hat she unveiled back in March for the Dutch state visit. The piece, which has a similar feel to a fedora (but without the distinctive pinches at the the top of the crown that characterize a fedora), is a fantastic shape, scale and colour for Marie and she wears it very well.

Princess Benedikte was the only member of the family to début a new hat. In sky blue felt, her hat included the pinched crown of a fedora, the indented top of a Pork Pie and the sharply upfolded diagonal brim of a ‘slice’. With so much going on with the shape of this piece, the designer did well to leave the hat unembellished and Princess Benedikte paired it beautifully with a streamlined beige coat, charcoal accessories and blue jewels. It’s an interesting hat that looks wonderful on her.

As with years past, yesterday’s opening of Parliament brought a quartet of interesting Danish Royal hats. Which one(s) stood out most to you?

Danish Royals Pay Tribute at Flag Day

On Saturday, Prince Joachim and Princess Marie commemorated Danish Flag Day by laying a wreath at Kastellet (The Citadel) and attending a memorial service for Danish soldiers at the Church of Holmen in Copenhagen. For this event, Princess Marie repeated her black headpiece with looped black silk organdie ribbons. This piece frames Marie’s face so beautifully and and the scale, which is as large as a small hat, is a very flattering one for her. Black hats can look very flat and one dimensional but this piece has a lovely sense of layered texture and movement while remaining perfectly appropriate for a memorial occasion.

Swedish Royal Wedding: Danish Royals

Royal Hats With close relations between the Swedish and Danish Royal Families (the King Carl Gustav and Queen Margrethe are first cousins and Queen Margrethe is Prince Carl Philip’s godmother), there was a predictably large group of Danish Royals in attendance at the Swedish royal wedding yesterday in Stockholm.

Queen Margrethe wore the most romantic of royal tiaras, the Baden Palmette Tiara. The heart-shaped scrolls on this piece are delicately pretty on Margrethe but its pairing with her cupid red gown (a stunning gown on its own) for a wedding felt a little cheesy. If I saw this ensemble at a royal banquet I would absolutely adore it but yesterday, I would have preferred a different tiara with this gown.

Crown Mary wore her Wedding Tiara, utilizing the piece’s option to add pearls to beef it up. I like this tiara much more with the pearl additions- it is an elegant piece that works well with her pearl drop earrings and stands out against Mary’s dark hair. Her ice blue gown was a great pairing with these jewels and while it looked great from a distance, a few issues with construction (wonky bust darts and oddly placed lace slapped on the front midsection) made me more a fan of the tiara than the dress.

Interestingly, Princess Mary tucked a diamond brooch into her chignon. I’m just not sure the addition was necessary or that the two pieces worked together.

Princess Marie wore the tiara she usually wears, her Diamond Floral Tiara. I adore the lightness and intrinsic beauty of floral tiaras and Marie wears this one well. Her fresh green dress was a great choice for a summer wedding although I would have preferred it much better without the oddly placed, pleated cummerbund.

The Danish royal’s fashion choices were not as successful as I would have hoped but  they looked to be having great fun at this event. I suppose in the end, that’s what matters most. Next, we’ll look at tiaras worn by the Norwegian royals.Princess Marie and Princess Mary, June 13, 2015 | Royal HatsPhotos from Patrick van Katwijk/dpa, Patrick van Katwijk/dpa, Patrick van katwijk/dpa,  Patrick van Katwijk/dpa, Patrick van Katwijk/dpa, and Splash News via Corbis; and Getty as indicated

Danish Royals Mark Constitution’s Centenary

The Danish Royal Family gathered at Parliament today to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 1915 Danish Constitution which gave women the right to vote. Queen Margrethe, who delivered a speech marking this event, repeated her mint green bumper hat and coordinating suit. Today’s photos give us the best view we have seen so far of the left side of the hat where the bumper brim splits and swirls into a gentle curve on the hat’s crown. This interesting detail makes me like this hat even more.

Crown Princess Mary repeated her pale grey fascinator made of silk flowers, multiple types of feathers and net veil. This delicate piece looks wonderful on Mary- it is such a beautiful contrast against her dark hair and her classic chignon shows it off to perfection. Where the ensemble falls short, in my humble opinion, is in this headpiece’s pairing with this dress. While contrast is a great thing in fashion, I think the very modern mustardy gold and silver print on the dress would be better balanced and complimented with a stronger, more substantial hat.

Princess Marie repeated the navy blue felt calot hat she first wore for Queen Margrethe’s birthday celebrations in April. For this outing, she changed the hat’s placement, wearing it firmly on the top of her head. While I prefer the off-the face placement we saw last time (where the flat bow trim on the side of the hat beautifully framed her face), I am so pleased to see Marie experimenting with different ways to wear this piece. It was beautifully paired today with her cream jacket, navy printed dress and bold brooch.

Princess Benedikte was a vision in pink, repeating her raspberry straw wide-brimmed picture hat with a narrow band around the crown. Paired with her pale pink rolled collar coat, the ensemble was so summery and fresh.

Birthday Celebrations for Queen Margrethe

Royal Hats

Queen Margrethe’s 75th birthday celebrations began with a gala dinner last night and continued with a traditional wakeup for the birthday girl this morning followed by a lunch at Copenhagen’s Town Hall. As expected, the smiling queen appeared at today’s festivities in a new suit, coat and matching hat.

The bumper style hat, in the same mint green wool crepe and Margrethe’s coat and suit, features a close-fit rounded crown with a small brim, tightly upturned around the hat. On the left side of the hat, the brim pulls away from the crown, forming a wide bow loop. The hat is further trimmed with two coordinating green feathers anchored inside this loop. The result is a hat with beautifully curving lines and shapes that are interesting, creative and very pretty. Queen Margrethe’s hairstyle is a difficult one to pair with hats (we have long talked about how many hats leave her looking bald) but the scale, colour and style of this piece works wonderfully for her.

Crown Princess Mary surprised in Jane Taylor’s ‘Greta’ dove grey circular dish hat with exquisitely detailed lace trim. I adore this hat but I didn’t like it with Mary’s outfit today- the mix of colours didn’t work for me and I thought the delicate lace on the hat didn’t work well with the chunky beading on the neckline of Mary’s coat.  I think this hat might need a monochrome ensemble to show to best effect (as we have already seen worn by the Countess of Wessex and Zara Phillips Tindall). For me, this ensemble is a case of numerous beautiful individual pieces that simply don’t work together.

Princess Marie repeated her black fascinator with looped black silk ribbons. This is a substantial piece that works well on Marie, particularly with her hair styled as it was today. Fascinators are getting a bad rap these days, thanks to some famous over-the-top designs and the meagre bits of fluff on a comb that are widely available in most junky accessory shops. This fascinator, however, with its wonderful shape, beautiful layers, elegant sense of movement and hint of playfulness, has every right to be on a royal head (even though today it had trouble staying on Princess Marie’s head!). Extreme wind aside, I thought Marie looked fantastic in this piece.

Queen Margrethe’s younger sister, Princess Benedikte, topped her pale pink coat and dress with a fuchsia tall-sided bumper hat. If the hat looks familiar to you, it is because it was previously trimmed with a large purple pompom at the back. While this hat now sports a wide looped bow in pale pink straw (clearly added to coordinate with this coat), I’m afraid the pompoms are still there. Amidst this disappointment, I still adored how the bright hue of this hat gave a perfect pop of colour to Benedikte’s ensemble. There’s also nothing like a bright pink hat to make one’s ruby earrings shine!

All in all, it was a great day of millinery for the Danish royal ladies and the birthday girl looked radiant. Jump over to this post for hats worn by Greek, Swedish and Norwegian royal guests.
