British Royals Attend Service of Commemoration

Members of the British Royal Family attended a Service of Commemoration at St. Paul’s Cathedral this morning, honouring the British military’s involvement in Afghanistan which has now come to an end. I suspect this service was made all the more personal for this family as Prince Harry, who was in attendance, served two terms of duty in this military operation.

Queen Elizabeth led her family at this event in a repeated her blue straw stovepipe hat, trimmed with a prim felt bow. This remains one of my favourite colours on the queen and I adore the pattern woven into the straw. With her bouquet of tulips and hyacinths, the Queen looked the picture of spring.

The Duke of Edinburgh, who holds the rank of Lord High Admiral in the navy, wore his uniform and cap. He gallantly offered his hand to his wife as they descended the steps of St. Paul’s, a sweet gesture that was caught on camera below.

The Prince of Wales, who holds five star ranking in all three branches (Army, Navy and Air Force) of the British Armed Services, also attended this service in uniform.

The Duchess of Cornwall repeated her black winter hat with a ruched crown and faux-fur cuff, pinning  the cap badge of The Rifles to the crown of the hat. While I loved the addition of this military brooch to her hat, I am afraid it feels a little informal for an event with as high a profile as this one. We’re going to look at this hat (and its many clones) in greater depth next week.

Also in military uniform were Princess Anne, as Commodore-in-Chief of HMNB Portsmouth and her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence.

The Duke of Cambridge wore his uniform and cap as Flight Lieutenant of the Royal Air ForceThe Duchess topped her simple navy dress and coat with a navy felt saucer hat which was trimmed by a navy silk abstract bow. The outfit and hat are rather austere but very fitting for this event. We have not seen Kate in a saucer hat in a very long while and it was a nice change from her go-to embellished berets. I thought her low chignon showed this hat to great effect and that Kate looked very elegant.

Prince Harry, who served two terms of duty in Afghanistan, was in attendance in his uniform as Captain of The Blues and Royals.

The Earl of Wessex wore his uniform and cap as Royal Honorary Colonel of the London Regiment. The Countess wore a new embellished percher hat with black felt beret base, trimmed in PVC ribbon. My first impression of this made me question the use of the shiny ribbon, which looks like patent leather. At second, third and fourth glances, however, I have come to really appreciate this piece. The sense of movement in this hat is absolutely exquisite and the contrast of texture between the two materials gives such visual depth and interest. I think this new hat will serve Sophie very well.

The Duke of Kent, the Duke of Gloucester, and the Duke of York also attended the service, each in their respective military uniforms and caps.

While royal hats are the focus of this blog, the aim of today’s commemoration service was to pay tribute to the service personnel who did not return home. This article at the Daily Mail includes photos of all the British service men and women who lost their lives during the course of this military intervention.

Day 2 of Cheltenham Festival

Ladies’ Day at the Cheltenham Festival was attended by two of our favourite hat-wearing members of the British Royal Family. The Duchess of Cornwall wore a new hat and matching coat in taupe Glen Urquhart plaid. The hat, with a ruched plaid crown, is trimmed with a wide faux fur cuff brim. Camilla has numerous other hats in this style (something we’ll look at more tomorrow), and often, the ruched crown of this design looks sloppy. The crown of this hat appears to be more structured, which benefits the overall appearance of the hat. It’s not my favourite hat design but this version looks great on Camilla and compliments her coat very well.

Camilla was joined by her children, Tom and Laura, and their spouses. Tom and Laura both sported hats and looked to be having a marvellous time with their mum.

British Royals Attend Commonwealth Observance Service

The Commonwealth Observance Service, the UK’s largest multi-faith celebration, took place this morning at Westminster Abbey. As in years past, the service was attended by Queen Elizabeth, the Duke of Edinburgh and other members of the British Royal Family. For this event, the Queen repeated her cream and gold split crown hat with black and gold feather trim. The photo taken inside the Abbey shows (bottom left) shows the textural depth of this hat and the warmth of its colour.  It has always been a great hat on the Queen and judging by the number of times she has worn it, she obviously agrees.

The Duchess of Cornwall repeated her navy wool felt hat with squared crown and angled brim, trimmed with a navy twisted rope wrapped around the base of the crown. While I have already been clear on my feelings about this hat’s strange ‘sausage’ rope, I thought this hat’s paring with Camilla’s silk dress and velvet trimmed wool coat was beautiful. Mixing different shades and textures of blue fabric in one outfit can be tricky but the result here is cohesive, interesting and very elegant.

The only new royal hat we saw today was the one worn by the Duchess of Cambridge who topped her blush pink McQueen coat with a coordinating percher hat. The hat, a tear drop shaped straw beret, was trimmed with pleated silk twists. The addition of pleated silk gave the hat constrast, movement and a decidedly modern feel and provided some sculptural edge to balance Kate’s coat.  While I would love to see Kate venture with different (larger?) hat shapes, she has years and years of royal life ahead of her to do so and I thought this hat was a winner.

While I would love to see the Duchess of Cornwall expand her millinery wardrobe with a few new additions, I think this trio of hats was a strong and attractive one. What did you think of these three hats today in London?

Seeing Quadruple: The Duchess of Cornwall

Royal HatsThe Duchess of Cornwall and her milliner, Philip Treacy, have developed her millinery wardrobe around two main styles of hats: large, embellished picture hats and smaller embellished berets. Don’t let the word ‘smaller’ deceive you – these are still substantial hats that make a significant style statement. Interestingly, four of these beret hats share the same trimming of sweeping, looped ribbons and large, silk cabbage roses:

While the character of each hat above is distinguished by a different colour and slightly different takes on the embellishment, their design is pretty much the same (along with a fifth variation without the ribbons). We have seen over the past decade that Camilla takes a no-nonsense approach to her hats and wardrobe, repeating shapes and styles that work for her. I suppose that is the reason between this group of quadruplets- they work and she obviously likes them- but doesn’t it seem a little curious to have four hats that are so similar?

Start of Mexican State Visit

The British Royal Family welcomed Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto and Señora Angelica Rivera de Pena on state visit to the UK today. Queen Elizabeth hosted this welcome in a hat we have not seen her wear for a while. With a textured tweedy square crown and a white straw brim, this hat was simply trimmed in a green band around the brim and a small cluster of green straw leaves and the same lace appliqué flowers that adorned her coat. With so many different textures and materials on one hat, this hat could have easily ventured into ‘too much’ territory but I think Angela Kelly found a perfect balance. It’s a lovely hat with just the right amount of contrast and embellishment.

The Duchess of Cornwall repeated her purple felt picture hat with feather spray of feathers. This photo today reminded me that Philip Treacy used the same trim on Camilla’s coat collar for a double wrap around the crown, giving this smooth hat great texture. I love how the hat is a slightly deeper shade of purple than Camilla’s coat- I think it gives a slight increase of depth and dimension to her overall outfit. I’ll be sad when it comes time to retire this hat because it’s one of Camilla’s best.

Angelica Rivera topped her beautiful white coat with a simple black straw circular rimmed percher hat. The hat, trimmed with a bow, completed a trio of black accessories that made for a classic black and white look. I imagine it’s tricky for first ladies to get the fashion ‘just right’ on these big events and Señora Rivera looked very elegant.
