Queen Margrethe Celebrates Kierkegaard

Queen Margrethe of Denmark attended a service at the Church of Our Lady in Copenhagen yesterday commemorating  Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard’s 200th birthday. For this engagement, she wore a turquoise hat with a mushroom shaped brim and a smart two-toned blue ribbon around the crown.  Margrethe has previously worn this hat to host the Chinese President in June 2012, and on visits to the UK and to Russia in 2011. It’s had a lot of wear for good reason- it’s a classic shape in one of the vibrant colours she favours and it looks very good on Margrethe.

Update- I mistook this hat (and it’s multiple wearings) to be the same as the blue hat Margrethe wore here today even though they are clearly different. Thanks to reader LouisaMay for pointing out the error!

Danish Royals Begin Summer Cruise Season

Each summer, Queen Margrethe and  Prince Henrik of Denmark embark on an extended summer tour aboard the royal yacht, Dannebrog. This afternoon, they kicked off the first leg of the 2013 summer cruise, setting sail from Copenhagen. Margrethe must have been excited about this event because she broke out a new hat.  As I mentioned earlier this week, Margrethe’s hats usually have a wacky bit of embellishment – this tomato red cloche had a giant red buckle. I could grow to like the shape of this hat (an interesting chimney with the pop-up domed top) on Margrethe but it’s ruined for me by that buckle.

Danish Queen and Princess Celebrate DEMA

Queen Margrethe and Princess Marie of Denmark marked the 75th anniversary of DEMA (Danish Emergency Management Agency) by attending a  reception at the agency’s headquarters in Birkeroe. While Marie was in uniform, Queen Margrethe wore the charcoal grey trilby (complete with koosh ball trim) she last wore for the opening of Parliament in 2008. It’s a good hat shape for her, don’t you think?

Birthday of Queen Margrethe

Queen Margrethe of Denmark turns 73 today. On more than a few occasions, however, this costume-designing Queen has worn some crazy millinery.  One of my favourites is this polka dotted number worn on a tour of South Korea in 2007. I don’t like this hat but I do grin widely at it because it is such a great example of her quirky and creative style. It takes a very confident woman to pull this look off and that makes me admire Queen Margrethe all the more.

Queen Margrethe in Græsted and Herning

Queen Margrethe was in Græsted today to open the exhibition “Chasubles, the church and the artist” at Esrum & Møllegård. She repeated the electric blue beanie cap with black trim she wore a few weeks ago (as well as in October 2010 and 2012). I’ve been outspoken about my dislike of this hat… so there’s not much more to say about it.

Last Monday (April 1, 2013) Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik traveled to Herning to take part in the town’s 100th anniversay. Margrethe repeated the purple wool diagonal brimmed hat we first saw at her Ruby Jubilee last year (all the other times she’s worn this hat are listed here). I like this hat and am happy she’s getting a lot of wear out of it but I’m ready to see her in something different. Or maybe, this hat worn with a different dress? Yes- that would freshen this hat up a lot, don’t you think? Maybe a grey suit? Or a tweed coat?
