Queen Máxima Opens Rotterdam Market

Queen Máxima attended the opening of ‘Markthal’, the first indoor fresh food market in The Netherlands, in Rotterdam today. Reader Jules commented earlier this week that Máxima’s dress code for official openings always includes a hat and today was no exception. This, however, was not just any hat, it was a new red calot/turban hat!

This calot was covered in pleated tomato red fabric which coordinated with the print of Máxima’s dress. I thought that the open bandeau neckline of the dress worked perfectly to balance the hat, which was further showed off to great effect with Queen Máxima’s chignon hairstyle and ruby earrings. While this red toque brings the total number of red toque hats in Máxima’s hat closet to four (see the other red toques at this post), I think it’s a winner and thought Máxima looked fantastic. I can’t wait to hear your opinions on this hat!

Queen Máxima Opens Science Museum

Queen Máxima attended the official opening of Micropia, a museum about micro-organisms, in Amsterdam today. While the museum sounds most interesting, I’m afraid Máxima’s hat choice was a disaster. She repeated the bright yellow fabric doughnut headpiece we saw her debut the 70th anniversary of D-Day in June. A bright yellow ring headpiece is bad on its own but paired with a matching jacket over a beigey-pink silk dress, it was truly awful. If you can find something attractive about this outfit, please do share because I’m afraid, dear readers, I can not.

Seeing Quintuple: Queen Máxima

Queen Máxima has certainly embraced the modified toque hat as one of her go-to hat styles. When she debuted a new red toque last week for Prinsjesdag, I had a sense of deja vu and I suspect some of you did as well:

To be fair, the red gown and toque worn last week are a different shade of red than Máxima’s red suit (and required a matching hat). However, does it seem strange to you that Máxima has two red toques to go with her red suit? Click on each of the photographs above to take you to the original post covering these events (and confirmation that the first two toques are indeed, not the same toque!). All three hats were designed by Belgian Milliner, Fabienne Delvigne.

UPDATES: Máxima’s penchant for toque hats has continued with fourth and fifth red beauties added October 1, 2014 (below left) and March 20, 2015 (below right). While the fifth had could arguably be considered a turban, Queen Máxima wears it in the same way she wears her other toque hats- off her face, centered on the crown of her head like a calot hat.  I think these two additions are due to colour and fabric matches- they both look to be custom made specifically to coordinate with certain dresses – and I am most amused to see two more come into circulation!

Dutch Royals Celebrate Prinsjesdag

It’s Prinsjesdag! Every year on the third Tuesday of September, the Dutch monarch addresses a joint session of the Dutch Senate and House of Representatives in The Hague. This speech from the throne lays out government’s goals, policies and budget for the following session of parliament. The event is mired in tradition and pomp- the family arrives in their gold coach, dressed in finery fitting with the 18th century court dress requirement (that’s when Prinsjesdag began and the dress code has not changed). This dress code makes the event one of the very few royal events where we see full length gowns topped with hats!

This is a wonderful dress code for Queen Máxima and she did not disappoint. She topped her cherry red tailored Valentino gown with a coordinating ruched calot hat designed by Fabienne Delvigne. The hat beautifully framed her face and slightly softened the strong lines of the dress. Máxima wears many Delvigne designed ruched toque and calot hats, to varying degrees of success (as yesterday’s post illustrated). At first glance, I thought this hat was well-balanced with just the right amount of movement in all the right places. A second look, however, makes me wonder if this hat is just too small. It seems precariously perched on the back of Máxima’s head, almost as an afterthought. She does look spectacularly regal but I think that’s thanks to the gown and jewels. The hat really doesn’t add much, does it?

The King and Queen were joined by Prince Constantijn and Princess Laurentien, who topped her purple coat with a camel hat. The hat, large-scale straw pillbox designed by Eudia, was trimmed with autumn-hued pheasant feathers. In some photos, it looked like the hat had a pointed peak in the front but I believe that was an illusion created by the feather trim. The hat helped tie Laurentien’s sash with her outfit and I think overall, it worked well for her. Her corduroy coat, however, is an entirely different matter…

I must admit- I miss the days when the royal balcony also included Princess Margriet and Princess (then Queen) Beatrix. What did you think of this pair of royal hats for today’s important event in Holland?

Dutch King and Queen Celebrate Protestant Church

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima attended Sunday Service at the Fontein Church in Nijkerk, The Netherlands, yesterday to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Protestant Church. For this event, Queen Máxima repeated her ruched pale pink calot hat. Every time I see this hat, I admire the lovely way it frames her face…

… until I see it from a side or back view, when I must lament how much it looks like a bandage wrapped around her head. I do love the pale pink hat and accessories with Máxima’s beautiful green suit but I’m afraid I’ll never truly warm to this hat. I do believe I would prefer this hat, this hat or even this hat with this ensemble. What do you think?
