Norwegian Royals Attend Christmas Day Service

King Harald, Queen Sonja, Princess Märtha Louise and her daughters attended Christmas day service together at Holmenkollen Chapel in Oslo yesterday. For this event, Queen Sonja repeated a hat with brown velvet crown and fur bumper brim. The brim coordinates with the collar on Sonja’s coat, a touch which adds a bit of formality to piece.

I find this style of loosely structured crown, even when made in velvet and trimmed in fur, an informal and slightly dowdy look. Two years ago on this same day, Queen Sonja paired this same coat with a chocolate felt fedora. Which hat do you think pairs with this coat best?

Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony 2017

Members of the Norwegian royal family attended the Nobel Peace Prize award ceremony yesterday in Oslo.

Queen Sonja wore a black cuffed bumper hat on the back of her head in the style of a calot. The back of the design appears to feature a ruffled bow.  The smaller scale of this design is a common choice for Sonja- it works well with her hair and the Norwegian queen’s petite stature. A better peek at the back detail might endear me more to this design- as it sits now, it’s a bit bland.

This event was Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s first appearance requiring millinery following her treatment earlier this fall for Benign Positional Vertigo. As such, it was no surprise that her headwear was extremely minimal- a simple black Prada headband. Here’s hoping she is able to recover enough that larger scale headpieces and hats become possible for her to wear again.

There’s no two ways about it- this hat and headband aren’t terribly exciting. Surprisingly… I’m not sure they needed to be. As much as most of us love to see a hat as the focus of an ensemble, sometimes it needs to be a more simple accessory, tying an ensemble together instead of stepping out as the star.

Both the queen and crown princess wore beautiful statement coats yesterday, coats that would have been thrown off balance by statement hats. And at this particular event –  one of considerable global significance – I wonder if millinery not seeking its own star power might be a good thing.

Sunday, October 8: Queen Elizabeth attended Sunday Service at Krathie Kirk in a repeated turquoise straw hat with feather trim. The Duchess of Cornwall was also in attendance in her taupe beret percher with pheasant feather trim.

Tuesday, October 10: Prince Fumihito and Princess Kiko of Akishino attended the closing of the National Sports Festival in Ehime. Princess Kiko wore what looks to be a new hat with wider than usual brim and pleated cafe-au-lait hued hatband.

Prince Harry arrived in Toronto ahead of today’s opening of the Invictus games to fit in visits to mental health facilities and rub elbows with athletes (even acting as an alarm for one Aussie athlete catching a nap). For Canadian readers, the Invictus Opening Ceremony will be broadcast this evening on CTV.

The exhibition “The House of Dior: Seventy Years of Haute Couture” opens tomorrow at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne. The opening will include several floor talks and a conversation with British millinery Stephen Jones who will share stories about his 20 years spent designing hats for Dior. Contact the museum for tickets.
