Danish Royal Couple Open Maritime Museum

Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik of Denmark opened the Maritime Museum in Helsingør yesterday. Margrethe repeated one of our favourites- her turquoise blue porkpie hat with curved brim. I love that she cheekily chose a blue hat and suit to open a maritime museum! You’ve got to love a royal hat wearer with both a sense of occasion and a sense of humour.

Guests at the Bourbon Parma Wedding

When the groom is the grandson, nephew and cousin to three monarchs, there’s bound to be a few hats at his wedding! Such was the case for Prince Jaime of Bourbon Parma and Viktória Cservenyák’s intimate family wedding today (you can see the bride, groom and their immediate families here).

Queen Maxima wore another one of her felt picture hats with a sharply upturned front brim. I believe this particular hat, in dark charcoal grey, is a new one for her, albeit a familiar shape. It worked well with her tunic, covered in purple paillet sequins.

Princesses Amalia, Alexia and Ariane were also sweetly coordinated with silver sequined bow bands in their hair.

Princess Beatrix looked quite smashing in a salmon pink hat with diagonal upturned brim and modern looped bow on the side.

Princess Mabel also attended (her daughter Zaria was one of the bridesmaids) and wore, quite understandably, a black dress, jacket and hat. The hat featured a wave style brim in multiple layers of fine straw and a white rose on the side. While I was not a big fan of this hat, I was so pleased to see Mabel at this wedding. (Update- several of you recognized this hat as the same one Mabel wore to Prince Constantijn and Princess Laurentien’s wedding back in May 2001).

Princess Laurentien repeated the grey hat she wore to Prinsjesdag in 2011. This ‘flat hat’ (my nickname for a hat where the crown and the brim flow together without the crown raising out of the brim) designed by Fabienne Delvigne features a mass of wispy grey feathers on the crown. It’s a great hat for the fashion-forward Laurentien. Countess Eloise, eldest daughter of Prince Constantijn and Princess Laurentien, made her hat debut with this stylish mini-fascinator of black feathers. Well done, Eloise!

Princess Margriet and Princess Aimée did not wear hats and Princess Annette and Prince Bernhard did not attend the wedding. Princess Anita, however, wore a light sea foam green fascinator of feathered flowers. Little Emma Von Vollenhoven wore a magenta pink carnation-style ribbon bow.

Princess Marilène wore a vibrant purple fascinator of large leaves and small trailing feathers. In a day filled with fascinators, this is one of two that I thought stood out best. Brilliant!

My other favourite fascinator of the day was worn by Juliana Guillermo, daughter of Princess Christina. Her mass of scarlet blooms contrasted so beautifully with her black and white dress and looked fantastic on her. Princess Christina also looked very happy and relaxed in a spiky feathered fascinator in shades of green and aqua.

All in all, it was a wedding filled with fascinators! Some were more successful than others but in the end, it was just lovely to see the Dutch extended royal family all together for a much happier occasion than when we saw them last. Congratulations to the happy couple!

Bourbon-Parma Wedding in Apeldoorn

Royal Hats Prince Jaime of Bourbon Parma (son of Princess Irene of the Netherlands) celebrated his religious marriage  to Viktoria Cservenyak today at The Church Of Our Lady At Ascension in Apeldoorn.

The bride was dressed by Danish designer Claes Iversen in an empire waist gown with boat neckline, three quarter length sleeves and a floral appliqued skirt that swept into a train.

Viktoria topped the gown with a full length, Swiss dot lace-edged veil anchored by the Dutch Ears of Wheat tiara.

The bride and groom’s immediate family members celebrated this wedding in a rainbow array of fascinators. Viktoria’s mother wore an explosion of teal and white feathers to coordinate with her dress and coat. Somehow, I think her coat would have coordinated much better with a picture hat.

Jaime’s mother, Princess Irene, wore a headpiece made of layered red straw leaves. It was a little pointy for my taste and I’m afraid I liked her coat much better than her millinery.

Jaime’s twin sister, Princesses  Margarita, looked to be wearing a curled headpiecearound the back of her head. It’s hard to tell without a closeup view but this fascinator seems a little lackluster to me.

You can’t say that however, about their sister Princess Carolina who followed her mother’s lead and went head-to-toe in the same colour. She looks great in purple (I really do love her dress) but that fascinator looks like a bath pouf, doesn’t it?

Princess Annemarie of Bourbon Parma (the wife of Jaime’s older brother Carlos) was admitted to hospital this week and was not able to attend (she is expecting a baby soon). I’m sure you all join me in wishing her and the baby good health.

While I thought the bride (who will now be known as the Countess of Montizón) looked lovely, I’m afraid I can’t say the same for the millinery worn by this couple’s immediate family. The rest of the Dutch Royal Family’s hats fared a little better- you can see them here.

Prince Harry Presides over the 2013 International Fleet Review

Prince Harry arrived in Australia yesterday to take part in the 100 year anniversary of the Royal Australian Navy’s fleet arriving into Sydney. This morning, he reviewed over 50 ships participating in the 2013 International Fleet Review at Sydney Harbour. Harry wore the his British Army uniform whites (tropical version of the uniform) complete with light blue beret. Below, he is shown with Vice Admiral Ray Griggs and Australian Governor-General Quentin Bryce. Mrs. Bryce’s pale turquoise hat is quite wonderful, isn’t it?
