King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima were in The Hague today to officially welcome Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos and his wife, Vlasia Pavlopoulou, on a two-day visit to the Netherlands.

For this event, Queen Máxima repeated her bright fuchsia pink straw picture hat with ‘slice’ raised brim. Already one of your favourite repeated hats of 2016, this design remains a fantastic colour, scale and shape for the vivacious Dutch Queen. The hat was also a great compliment to her Valentino paradise-patterned dress, providing solid grounding against the intense print.
On this day, I think the hat was the best part of Máxima’s ensemble- what do you think?

While I don’t personally care for the print, she looks fabulous, and I love how the hat and belt pick up the small amount of this color in the print.
I love the hat; the Queen wears it so well. The dress is beautiful, but would have looked better more fitted to her body, to show off the fabulous scenic view…sans the belt, of course. It just looked a little dowdy and ill-fitting to me.
I love the hat and the very subtle way the colour compliments the pattern of the dress – just brilliant. The dress is not my cup of tea but looks lovely on her and works beautifully with the hat and shoes. The earrings are where the outfit really falls apart for me. Too matchy, matchy for me and not elegant at all. I am sure they are quite expensive but look like they were purchased from bargain basement. Such a lovely, summery out but I really can’t get by those earrings.
This was NOT a state visit at all, just an official visit, that is why there wasn’t a gala dinner in the presence of the King and Queen. They have had a luncheon with the Greek president and his wife.
Thanks, Sophie. I was also going to remind everyone that, as stated in the post, this was just a visit. State visits do have more formal dress codes and I think Maxima’s dress yesterday was perfectly appropriate for the occasion. Jelsta’s quote is interesting about Maxima keeping her hat on during lunch. I don’t find it offensive but apparently, some did.
As the Noordeinde Palace (where the luncheon was held) is a working palace and not a residence, I see it as perfectly fine that Máxima kept her hat on during the luncheon. If this had been at their official residence, than traditional etiquette would say she shouldn’t be wearing a hat in her own home. But again, the Greek first lady isn’t even wearing a hat, as most people do nowadays, so . . .
Queen Maxima looks marvelous! I love her hat choices.
I want to share thiscomment from RJWMB:
“Unfortunately HM still hasn’t got Dutch etiquette and wore the hat for the luncheon. As her leading female guest wasn’t wearing a hat HM should have considered wearing one at all, but certainly should have taken hers off for lunch.
Dutch hostesses do not wear a hat indoor of their home.”
We don’t have many hat wearers in our Dutch country apart from Beatrix and Maxima, not even at weddings or funerals. As far as I know and I have to admit my knowledge mainly stems from romantic dutch novels from the sixties and seventies a lady can wear a hat outside as well as inside as long as it is daytime and it is not a warm hat.
Love the hat. Love the whole outfit. It’s quite streamlined and elegant and accessorized very nicely. The picture on the dress could be taken as a celebration of the beauty of Greece, which would be a compliment to her quests. Queen Maxima certainly has fun with her clothes.
This sure is a favorite for me. I think she looks fabulous.
agree with Jake, this does make me smile, so it still is a great look overall,
This is such a Max outfit; it’s quite fabulous isn’t it. The dress is fun and the accessories ground it really well. Is it state visit appropriate? Hmm, not 100% sure, but it’s definitely fun.
I agree with what Jake says: July 4, 2016 at 2:02 pm. And I agree with others who have complained about the belt too.
I love the hat and it goes well with the dress which I think is great as well, though the belt does cut in the middle of the print BUT I don’t think it is the dress for a state visit. It is a fun, whimsical and causal dress which to me doesn’t say state visit yet it certainly say Queen Maxima!
I think the hat works well with the dress. It’s a match not just to the rosy tones in the middle, but also the whimsical design. But, I’m not sure it’s quite right for a state welcome, and it’s too bad that the unnecessary belt blocks the scenery.
I do not mind the dress. I agree the belt is the mistake here. The hat of course is fabulous but wasted on this outfit. She must have a more suitable hat. Any suggestions?
After considering these hats, I think the pink one she chose today is still the best choice. A design in natural straw would be too literally beachy.

Thank for this wonderful archive digging Hat Queen!
Love the hat. Since the dress is so wild, though, perhaps the hat should be the beige shade of its top portion. Then one could concentrate on one over-the-top part of the outfit, the dress, without the current competing items: the bright pink hat, the pink belt, the pink gloves — maybe there’s pink purse there too. Even though the hat’s the best part of this outfit, losing it for the sake of the dress (if that’s what Queen Máxima is focusing on) might improve the outfit. Nonetheless, the hat itself is fabulous.
Love the shape and color of her hat, but am not a fan of her dress.
Like the hat with the dress and the shoes. She looks fab as always!
The hat is fantastic; the dress is not my cup of tea.
I’m going to take the other side and say I like her dress, with the exception of the belt disrupting the design picture. I love the imagery in the fabric. And I like her black shoes since the bottom of her dress is black.
Her hat is a marvelous “Queen Máxima hat” that she always carries off well.
The hat is great, but the dress is horrid. A dress in a tacky print has to at least have a sense of humour. Fail.
This is always gonna be a fantastic hat for Máxima, but I’m less enthused about the dress. If she had worn her fuchsia heels instead of these black ones, it would’ve helped tie everything together much more nicely. Also, her chignon is not as polished as it usually is. Overall, a nice showing, but not her best.
