Catching Up On Sunday Hats

During Queen Elizabeth’s annual late summer residency at Balmoral Castle, we often see something we don’t see many other times of the year- her church hats! Back on September 23, her Sunday hat was of particular interest as I believe it is new:

Covered in the same raspberry wool as her coat, the hat looks to be trimmed with a spray of fuchsia feathers on one side. The colour is marvelous on Her Majesty and there looks to be some textural contrast on the brim edging and hatband.  It also looks to be off the same block in Rachel Trevor Morgan’s studio as this familiar blue one:

This past Sunday, the Queen repeated her royal blue hat with hourglass/teardrop shaped crown trimmed with a large blue and black feather. Not my favourite millinery shape in Her Majesty’s closet, the hat is redeemed slightly by it’s wonderful colour.

Belgian Monarchs Visit Austria

King Philippe and Queen Mathilde were welcomed in Vienna this morning by Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen and his wife Doris Schmidauer for a quick, one-day visit centered around opening a Belgian exhibition at the Art History Museum of Vienna. For this trip, Queen Mathilde topped a new forest green portrait collared dress with a matching felt brimless hat.

The folded design has an organic shape that references both a calot and beret- while the shape doesn’t fit traditional millinery categories, the fluid lines on the hat and dress work beautifully together. I’m not always a fan of head to toe looks in the same colour but slight variations in shade between these pieces (enough just to notice but not to clash!) and excellent proportions I think, makes this pairing work.

Hats From the Past

Royal Hats to this day in 1969 and the christening of Prince Nikolaos of Greece and Denmark. The hats worn by his mother, Queen Anne-Marie, grandmother Queen Frederica and aunts Princess Sofía, Princess of Asturias (future Queen Sofia of Spain) and Princess Irene of Greece and Denmark are a parade of brimless millinery at the height of fashion in the late 1960s.

Back on September 15, Princess Helene of Yugoslavia (granddaughter of Regent Prince Paul of Yugoslavia and King Umberto II of Italy) and  married Stanislas Fougeron in Villeprevost, France. The Duchess of Cambridge atttended her friend Sophie Carter’s wedding last weekend in a cornflower blue silk flower and crin bandeau headpiece from Juliette Botterill. It’s such a pretty colour but the combination of this design with the matching dress and coat reads too twee for my liking.

Crown Prince Frederik visited Frederikshavn in military uniform on Monday to celebrate the city’s 200th anniversary

King Carl Gustaf visited several sites in Östergötland on Thursday in his trusty brown fedora hat.

Princess Hisako and Crown Princess Masako both wore hats in fresh green hues this week- Princess Hisako officially closed the 7th Special Olympics National Summer Games in Aichi on Wednesday in this cream hat with green hatband and starburst bow while Crown Princess Masako wore this pistachio green bowler with brocade hatband on Thursday at the World Social Science Forum in Fukuoka.

Royal Hats

Much has been written about the Duchess of Sussex’s first charity project in support of the Hubb Community Kitchen. Take time to read the cookbook’s forward (see it here)– clearly written in her own voice, it’s compelling and beautiful.

Mike and Zara Tindall joined the first leg of the Blue Marine Foundation fundraiser cycle ride from London to Monaco last week (they joined in from London to Dover).

Prince Albert and Princess Charlene brought along Princess Gabriella and Prince Jacques for a ceremony yesterday to christen two yachts.

Beautiful images shared from the Duke of Cambridge’s visit to Africa this week

We end this week with another stunning landscape photo from James Ogilvy. Have a great weekend, everyone!

Hat From the Past

Royal Hats to this day in 1960 when a young King Bhumibol and Queen Sirikit of Thailand embarked on a four day state visit of Italy. Pictured here in Rome, Queen Sirikit wore in a textured white turban-pillbox hybrid (of a material I can’t begin to guess at) with some sort of bejeweled trim on the front.
