Queen Elizabeth attended Sunday morning service this morning at the Church of St. Mary Magdalene on the Sandringham estate. For this outing, she repeated her royal purple felt hat with square crown, upfolded kettle brim and dark purple velvet hatband with updated dark purple silk flower trim.

The connection between hat and coat has always been a good one, thanks to the dark velvet trim on both pieces, but many of us had qualms about the previous white silk iris trim. Swapping out the white irises for these dark blooms pulls the hat back into harmony with the ensemble and lends a lovely note of luxury to the design through the layered textures of felt, velvet and silk.
The Queen was joined by the Earl of Snowdon and Countess of Snowdon and Lady Helen Taylor. Serena sported a deep purple felt, formed beret while Helen wore a large, brimless hat in caramel felt with domed top. I don’t believe either hat has been seen publicly before.
I give the Queen’s hat renovation a thumbs up- what do you think?

The hat has certainly gained greatly from the change of trim.
Still not my favorite hat for HM as I find the angles too harsh, but this trim renovation is a good improvement! I also like her lady-in-waiting’s cranberry-colored fedora/wide brimmed hat.
The structured beret on Serena is quite fantastic in it’s rich purple color, and the color blocking with the navy jacket and wine skirt is fun and unexpected. Helen’s rounded toque/structured beret is a nice and easy choice for church in the country. I wonder if that’s Lady Margarita behind them in the black fedora? Finally, another missed opportunity for a good fedora for Lord Snowdon.
The queen’s hat is lovely, but I especially like Lady Helen Taylors caramel hat. It’s an interesting size and proportion but the sleek lines make it clean. Really great.
This change from white silk to purple velvet provides needed cohesion to this outfit. Well done!
This is a very good reno. I’ve always liked the colour and the velvet contrast. But the harsh white flowers were just a bit stark. This much more tonal addition is much better.
And yes that is Serena Linley (erm, Snowdon!) who looks fab in shades of purple too.
The hat makeover looks very successful! It looks like, with the limited amount of pictures, that the trim may be slightly to the left of our view on HM’s right like you wished for HatQueen!
