Monday Multiples: Queen Maxima Orange Slice

As Canadian readers enjoy Thanksgiving today, we’re looking at a seasonally-fitting hat in warm orange straw. Queen Máxima has paired this burnt sienna design with sidesweeping brim by Fabienne Delvigne with three ensembles so far:

Look #1: With a belted suede jacket and orange silk crepe gown worn for Prinsjesdag in The Hague on September 20, 2005

Look #2: With the same suede jacket and multicoloured floral silk dress worn on April 30, 2006 in Stockholm for King Carl Gustaf’s 60th birthday celebration.

Look #3: With a chocolate, cream, lime and orange silk twill striped dress by Jan Taminau worn October 17, 2019 in Kochi, India

Which look do you think works best with this hat?

  1. Happy Thanksgiving Hat Queen! I hope you got a much deserved break and some delicious dinner.

I like Outfit #3 the best with the hat. Everyone already stated the reasons very eloquently.

  2. I really like this hat. It’s a difficult color to wear, but goes well with the dress worn on the trip to India.

The first two looks are so confusing that it is hard to unsee the outfits and evaluate the hat!

Enjoyed Jimbo’s comment about teenage girls getting dressed up for Easter!

  3. Number three by a mile!

The first look is just a mix of styles, you can tell she hadn’t got the hang of long day dresses yet, still trying to make a businesslike look work. And I really feel suede is a more casual material. Look two just feels so dated now, like a fabulous air stewardess.
Three is a fun dress with the hat not competing for attention. It’s a bold look but done with the sure hand that Máx has (most of the time…) these days.

  4. I like this hat, it’s a good colour and the style is one Maxima wears well. I don’t think the first outfit is well-thought out, although that’s mainly due to the clash between the rather business -like jacket and the floaty style of dress (the dress to me gives a definite evening wear vibe and doesn’t double as court day dress as well as many of Maxima’s other dresses). I think the jacket goes very well with the hat, however, and while outfit two is not my favourite, it isn’t bad. I’d really like to see the hat and jacket worn with some other option underneath. I do very much like outfit three, though, I think the hat goes very well with the bold dress.

    • Bristol, you beautifully stated my exact thoughts. Each appearance of the hat improved because of the accompanying ensemble. In today’s case, the suede jacket is at odds with the dress. I included an opposite example which I find jarring also. Below, I think the dress is at odds with the denim jacket and casual beret. I’m no Pierre Cardin, I just know what I like. It also reminds me of teenage girls getting all dressed up for Easter, then putting on the only warm coat they own – a denim jacket.

  5. I do love this hat and Maxima wears it so well I prefer the third look. I think the second look is too fussy with all the bows/ties on the dress, jacket, and shoes. I think the jacket seems out of place in the first look.

  6. This is a Delvigne hat I definitely like and loved its premiere; despite the all-orange look, the burnt orange paired with the tangerine dress helped keep it from being overwhelming, and it remains one of my favorite Máxima Prinsjesdag looks ever. Ultimately, I think it’s hard to compare this ensemble to others because of the unique dress code.

Look #3 is a fresh modern take on it, and one I would welcome back again anytime (even though the dress is clearly a nod to India). I don’t care for the dress or hairstyle of look #2, but those shoes are amazing!

  7. I like look 3 the best- the hat feels too imposing with the neckline of the jacket. That being said, I thought look 2 was still more successful than look 1. Fun comparisons!
