As we have come to expect at such landmark royal events, royal guests at King Charles III’s coronation represented nations from around the globe. Those who wore hats to this event were as follows:
The Sultan of Brunei and King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden

King Abdullah and Queen Rania of Jordan: Queen Rania wore a brimless domed hat in the same pale yellow as her dress. The design includes embellishment at the back (a rosette? a bow?) and a wrap of delicate yellow veil.

Prince Albert and Princess Charlene of Monaco: Princess Charlene topped her pale suit (love the pearl floral buttons!) with a sleek beret percher hat simply trimmed with a knotted bow at the side. The hat looks to be covered in the same barely-blush hue as the suit.

King Willem Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands: Queen Máxima wore a structural white straw saucer hat with brim extension and flying bow. The vertical design of the hat pairs so beautifully with the exquisite applique lace cutout on the bodice of her dress.

King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain: Queen Letizia wore the largest hat we’ve seen her in to date, a design in natural hued straw with mushroom brim and button crown, draped in an overlay of widely woven (I think it’s vintage?) bubblegum pink net veil. It’s a dramatic design for Letizia and so wonderful to see her experimenting with new millinery shapes.

I know many of your have been waiting for this- which hats stood out most to you?
Images from Getty as indicated
As always, it’s wonderful to see so many hats in one place! And what a variety they were. I think virtually all of them were successful hats on their own terms, but some of them didn’t achieve peak success when actually worn. I’m thinking of Queen Rania’s hat, which I can see being a real success if styled differently – perhaps worn at a different angle over more formal hair. Also Mette Marit’s pillbox – with the birdcage veil, it just didn’t make sense placed as it was – a veil has to come down over the eyes to look intentional! Victoria’s pillbox, on the other hand, worked very well, while Crown Princess Mary’s bandeau shows how elegant a birdcage veil can be when worn well – and it elevated the bandeau into something appropriate to the occasion too, I feel. (Normally I’m not that much of a fan of a monochrome ensemble, but in this case Mary’s turquoise jewellery provided just enough contrast to rescue it!)
The hats of the Queen of Lesotho, Princess Sophie and Queen Maxima were excellent, as was Princess Charlene’s although somehow I felt her overall look came to less than the sum of its parts.
I thought Letizia’s hat was great, very simple but very effective. I felt the whole outfit would have looked better together if the dress had been a little more streamlined (either no peplum, or one without pleats, I think), but it was lovely to see her pull out the stops for this occasion.
Yes, you’re right (about waiting for the post)!
The standouts for me in terms of hat design & styling were: QMaxima – the hat is light, has joie de vivre (like its wearer) and is in a great colour; my only quibble is the cut-out section across the shoulders of the dress which, for me, cheapens the effect; QMathilde – a super-elegant hat design and colour combination although the dress has an atrocious fit across the chest & CPV – a sleekly-designed pillbox with interest in a glamorous fabric in a gorgeously-happy blue.
The problematic pieces were: QRania: a nice colour but the hat looks flimsy and messy; PssCharlene: the hat design is too small – made even worse by the severe haircut – with an unflattering and seemingly uncomfortable look and QLetizia: while agreeing she should be applauded for experimenting with a larger hat design, it was too big for this event IMO.
I saved reading this post till today except for reading about Princess Sophie of Liechtenstein. Since my grandfather’s family is from Liechtenstein I have a soft spot for her and I thought this was one of her best outings ever. She really looked elegant from head to toe! With all the ladies I think we need to keep in mind that according to modekoninginmaxima.nl the ladies were not told till the last minute that the dress code was to be short dresses instead of long dresses. I think most of these dresses would have worked well in the long form. I think P. Charlene’s dress with the scarf over her shoulder would’ve looked better in the long form. I do wish it had been a dress instead of two pieces. And, although, I am just glad that Char felt well enough to be at the coronation I think a larger hat would’ve balanced out her ensemble better. I guess I’m the only one that thinks Queen Letizia’s hat was too large for her. I am glad to see her try a new style of hat, but I didn’t think this one was right for the occasion or her outfit. The Queen of Lesotho looked perfect and I am glad she didn’t get the memo about the shortened dress code. Another standout to me was Princess Mary. I thought she looked so regal–just perfection from head to toe! I don’t think there were any real misses. Everyone looked appropriate and I appreciate the ones like Maxima that still found a way to bring out the bling! A huge diamond on your waist is a very good thing at a coronation where certain ones were hoping for tiara’s and got none. Thank you for all the work you did, HatQueen in compiling this. It was hat heaven for sure. Now, hopefully you can recover before Ascot comes.
The standouts here IMO are Q. Letizia (such a successful hat outing for her especially since she doesn’t wear hats as much as some of the other European royal ladies) and Q. Maxima. I also especially love Q. Mathilde’s hat, it’s such an interesting shape. CP Mary looks wonderful head to toe and most of the ladies look lovely. Personally I wish CP Mette Marit and P Charlene wouldn’t wear such pale colors, but that’s their preference. Queen Mesenate’s hat is also lovely.
The only hats I didn’t care for were Queen Rania’s (I think it’s the angle combined with the hair that makes it seem too flat) and CPVictoria’s (which just seemed kind of boring for an event like this), but overall it was great to see so many great hats!
Loving all the hats – just so great to see them in abundance for once!
Thanks for the coverage.
On a housekeeping note I really struggled to load this page – it took ages after a couple of fail messages. Sadly, your pages are always very slow to load. Is it because of all the pictures?
Yes, it is due to the pictures. I’ll look into this more when I’m able to later in summer.
Loving Crown Princess Mary and Sophie from Lichtenstein… outstanding!
Glad to see Princess Charlene was well enough to attend.
Queen Letizia from Spain’s Hat was stunning!
Bit underwhelmed with Queen Max of the Netherlands and VERY underwhelmed with Queen Rania of Jordan, what was she thinking??
Queen Mesenate of Lesotho: words fail me
I think Queen Mesenate looks so, so elegant!
Queen Letizia and Maxima looked stunning, love both their hats and outfits, beautiful.
The lady from Lichtenstein and Crown Princess Mary also looked absolutely lovely
