Spanish State Visit to Netherlands

King Felipe and Queen Letizia in Spain kicked off a state visit to the Netherlands today.

Queen Letizia topped her acqua caped coat with a curved headpiece in almond sinamay swathed in dotted tulle veil in the same hue.

The quirky ‘s’ shape is unique and the scale works well for petite Letizia. Millinery statements don’t have to be magenta and wide brimmed (see below!) to pack real style punch and I really like the creative unexpectedness of this one, not to mention its lovely construction. What’s curious, however, is that based on the milliner’s photo below, the design was created to be worn on the left side, curving around the face. Letizia wore it on the right side, curved around the side of her head. I prefer her placement… but kudos to a design with flexibility.

Queen Máxima repeated a wide brimmed picture hat in deep pink parabuntal straw with sharply upfolded ‘slice’ brim and a raspberry ribbon hatband. We all know this go-to shape on Máxima and the vibrant colour elevates the drama. Monochrome ensembles in such a bright colour can be risky but the different textures on each element give enough contrast to keep the look from being overly one note.  Any time a royal matches their lipstick to their hat, I am there for it!

  1. While it’s not my favorite design nor is the placement my first choice, I’m still gonna call this a win for Letizia. She doesn’t wear many hats, and honestly I was surprised she wore one this time, and something as avant-garde as this for her as well. The almond color pairing with the teal was a good choice, and I definitely loved her outfit. It would be interesting to see her wear this as the designer had it displayed on the mannequin head just to see the difference.

Typical Máxima, but in the best way! She and Letizia looked like they were having some good conversation, presumably in Spanish. 😀 Brava!

  2. Today’s State Visit is much improved from the Luxembourg/Belgium visit. Max: no surprises, magnificent color. Letizia: quite nice, quirky pretzel activity with her aqua ensemble.

  3. I love Maxima’s look, especially the hat / hair combo! I always love her with neat hair and a hat. And that brooch is to die for! Letizia’s hat…well it’s giving me Princess Beatrice puffy pretzel hat vibes, but laying down instead of upright, which is weird because the hatmaker photos make it look lovely. From some angles it looks ok, but from other views, especially straight on, it looks odd on her head. It’s rare to see her in a hat, so at least she is wearing one. I do love the dress though–it’s a very springy color.

  4. If memory serves, Angela Kelly shared a story about her early days with the Late Queen and putting a hat on her the opposite way from what the designer intended!

I don’t mind this on Leti, but feel the color choice makes more sense in photos where she’s wearing a coat/cape of the same color.

Max is doing what Max does best!
