Ascot 2022 Day 2: Princess Anne

Princess Anne attended the second day of Royal Ascot today in another new hat! In grey sinamay, the hat follows a stovepipe shape with tall crown and downward facing brim. It is trimmed with a grey sinamay bow edged in blue ribbon, a layered blue ribbon hatband and a spray of grey feathers.

It’s a well balanced design and the blue trim gives a lovely bit of contrast. I’m not sure grey is Princess Anne’s best colour but I’m going to welcome this new hat nonetheless!

Ascot 2022 Day 2: Earl & Countess of Wessex

The Earl and Countess of Wessex took in the second day of racing at Royal Ascot today. Sophie wore a new denim blue sinamay saucer hat with matching inverted crin binding, crin ruffle and silk flowers.

It’s such a great hat with wonderful balance of shape and trim. I think it’s also a great pairing for Sophie’s broderie anglaise dress, the monochrome colour creating harmony between the different textures. Yes, there is a lot of textures happening at once but I think it still works.

Ascot 2022 Day 2: Princess Beatrice & Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi

At a time when fashion sustainability is only growing in importance, it’s lovely to see any royal pull something out of their closet that has not been much worn, especially when it’s as sharp and chic a hat as this! The pairing of hat with streamlined cream dress and sleek ponytail works so well and the hat’s colour and scale suits Beatrice very well. Whoever is styling her this week deserves applause!

Edoardo looked very dapper indeed in his black antique silk top hat. It’s lovely to see young spouses embracing traditional hats like this, isn’t it?!

Ascot 2022 Day 2: Prince of Wales & Duchess of Cornwall

The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall led the royal carriage procession again today for the second day of Royal Ascot. The Duchess wore a new hat, in fine cream straw with angular crown and gently sidesweeping brim. The sleek design is trimmed simply with a monochrome cream silk padded hatband.

Thanks to reader Jake Short for the reminder this hat was worn first for the opening of parliament last year- Camilla has so many hats in this same shape it’s difficult to keep them straight.  This one is fine… but with so many other cream hats in her wardrobe, I’m curious about why another has been added.
