Ascot 2022 Day 1: Gloucesters & Kents

The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, Prince and Princess Michael of Kent and Lady Frederick Windsor also attended the first day of Royal Ascot races today. The Duchess of Gloucester repeated her new black sinamay hat with wide, upturned pleated brim. The hat is trimmed with a slim double hatband.

Prince Michael and Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester wore black silk and grey felt top hats.

Lady Frederick Windsor (who goes by her maiden name, Sophie Winkleman, professionally) wore a natural hue dotted straw beret percher with large bow. The hat is trimmed with a spray of beaded strawberries. It’s a charming hat but I would have preferred it be paired with something less obvious than a strawberry printed dress!

Ascot 2022 Day 1: Zara & Mike Tindall

Zara and Mike Tindall attended the races today, Mike in his antique black silk top hat and Zara in a cream button percher with pastel tulle pompom trim.

The whimsical hat is an unexpected pairing for this dress, but that’s what makes it work so well. Pair the hat with a floral ensemble and it would be difficult to keep the look from falling to twee. Here, the hues pull together while the edginess of the dress balances the frothy, fun hat. I’ll admit it’s not something I would wear but it’s so interesting to admire and Zara deserves kudos for carrying it off so flawlessly.

Ascot 2022 Day 1: Princess Anne, Timothy Laurence & Peter Phillips

Princess Anne and her family enjoyed the races today. She repeated a brown sinamay waved disc hat trimmed with ivory and chocolate layered sinamay bows and ivory feathers.

While the hat pairs well with Anne’s embroidered coat, I’m neither a fan of the shape or the trim. It also is so like some of her other hats, I’m very surprised not to find any previous outings (I think it’s new!).  Was it the best addition to Anne’s millinery wardrobe? I’m not so sure. In the gallery below, you’ll see her husband, Vice Admiral Timothy Laurence, joined the carriage procession in his black silk top hat.

Ascot 2022 Day 1: Earl & Countess of Wessex

The Countess of Wessex attended Royal Ascot today in a hat many of you have been hoping to see again! Her magnificent burgundy straw braid bergère with shallow, flat crown and wide brim made its second appearance at the races, this time trimmed with burgundy and pink jinsin interwoven twists.

The retrim is clearly a move to match the hat to Sophie’s pink dress and the pieces combine well…. better, I think, than its previous pairing. I miss the rose trim originally on the hat but see why it would not have worked with this ensemble. It’s fantastic to see hats reworked and not relegated to the back of a wardrobe after just one outing. The photo on the right below shows the hat in its original iteration.

The Earl of Wessex attended as well (see him handing out prizes below!), presumably in his black antique silk top hat. I’ll update the post when photos become available.

Ascot 2022 Day 1: Princess Beatrice & Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi

Princess Beatrice topped a floral maxi dress with a halo bandeau headpiece in natural straw trimmed with pink silk abaca bows and silk flowers.

The lightness of the woven straw base and delicate flowers is enchanting on Beatrice, the smaller scale balancing the dress well and warm colour of the natural straw suits her so well. The overall look is  fresh, youthful and oh so pretty for a hot summer’s day.
