Ascot 2024 Day 1: Extras

The first day of Royal Ascot saw several other royal and noteable guests:

Prince Philippos of Greece wore a black silk top hat. Princess Nina wore a white straw boater with wide brim, trimmed with stacked silk hatbands and a large tassel.

Queen Camilla’s sister, Annabel Elliot, wore a navy straw hugger with dotted veil and pinwheel feather trim. The sisters’ mutual friend, Lady Sarah Keswick, wore a wonderful wide brimmed white hat with teal trim and a stunning spray of blue and white lily-of-the-valley

The Coronation: Royal Guests

As we have come to expect at such landmark royal events, royal guests at King Charles III’s coronation represented nations from around the globe. Those who wore hats to this event were as follows:

King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain: Queen Letizia wore the largest hat we’ve seen her in to date, a design in natural hued straw with mushroom brim and button crown, draped in an overlay of widely woven (I think it’s vintage?) bubblegum pink net veil. It’s a dramatic design for Letizia and so wonderful to see her experimenting with new millinery shapes.

Remembering King Constantine II

King Constantine II, former King of the Hellenes, died today at a private hospital in Athens at the age of 82.

He was born on June 2,1940 in Athens to Princess Frederica of Hanover and Crown Prince Paul of Greece. After winning a gold medal in sailing at the 1960 Rome Olympics and serving in all three branches of the Hellenic Armed Forces, the hugely popular prince acceded to the throne in 1964 at just 23 years of age. One of the youngest monarchs in recent memory, his nine-year reign coincided with one of the most turbulent periods in Greece’s political history. Forced into exile in 1967 following a military coup, the resulting dictatorship abolished the monarchy in 1973, thereby ending a dynasty begun by Constantine’s Danish-born great-grandfather George I in 1863.

King Constantine lived with his family in a north London suburb for most of his years in exile, returning to Greece for the first time in 1981 for his mother’s funeral. Visits continued and in 2013, he and Queen Anne-Marie returned there permanently. He has close ties to numerous royal houses- his elder sister is Queen Sofia of Spain; his sister-in-law is Queen Margrethe of Denmark; his uncle was Greek-born Prince Philip, the late Duke of Edinburgh; and his cousins included the late King Michael I of Romania, Crown Prince Alexander of Serbia and King Charles III, with whom he shared an especially close relationship. These strong familial ties saw King Constantine and his family often attend British and European royal family events.

King Constantine is survived by his wife, Queen Anne-Marie; five children, Alexia, Pavlos, Nikolaos, Theodora and Philippos; and nine grandchildren.

Danish Golden Jubilee: Extended Family & Royal Guests

Princess Benedikte used the occasion to debut a new hat in biscuit colour straw with wide cartwheel brim and straight-sided crown. The hat is trimmed in a bias hatband in the same woven fabric as the ensemble’s coat, looped on the side in a bow. While I’d have preferred the hatband to be a little shorter, the overall look is still wonderfully elegant.

Princess Nathalie of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg repeated her mother’s cream sinamay hat with wide upsweeping brim. We’ve previously seen this hat trimmed only with a wide sinamay hatband and it’s a nice change to see the large silk rose in apricot hues that Nathalie added to link the hat with her dress.
