While on the topic of Imperial royal fashion-longtime Japanese designer Jun Ashida passed away last week. This New York Times article about his royal fashion connection is most interesting.
The Princess of Asturias made her first public speech and showed considerable poise and confidence amidst many flashbulbs.
We close this week with a very sweet snap shared by Princess Madeleine. Have a great end of weekend!

Queen Elizabeth’s Iconic Hats

Over the late summer and early fall, we undertook a quest to identify Queen Elizabeth’s most iconic hats. Through much searching and discussion, we narrowed down hats worn over eight decades to a few that are “widely known and acknowledged especially for distinctive excellence.” It’s interesting- some hats were nominated as iconic for the events they attended, while others for the merit (or memorability) of their design. Despite some difficulties with subjectivity and definition, there were 34 hats that received consensus as deserving of this ‘iconic’ label:

It’s incredibly difficult to narrow down several hundreds (thousands?) of hats worn over eight decades but I think you have done and excellent job with this group. Numerous hats here are known by a nickname (surely a sight of distinctive excellence!) or by naming the event they were worn to. I’m curious, dearest readers- what do you think of your list? Are there hats here you don’t think should be included? Is there are particular hat you think has been unfairly omitted?

Dutch Monarchs Attend Political Farewell

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima visited the Council of State in The Hague today to attend a farewell reception of vice-president Piet Hein Donner. For this, Queen Máxima repeated her grey felt pillbox hat trimmed sparingly with grey ribbon binding around the base and a slim double bow at the side.

It’s a simple hat that suffers a bit from styling choices here- hat and trouser combinations are always tricky (to be fair, this is better than most) and this hat is caught in a battle of prevailing formality between the casual hairstyle and stunning pearl jewelry. The ensemble’s colour palate is good but with the trouser cuffs overtaking the width of the hat, I think the overall balance of the look is off.

Japanese and Bavarian Royal Weddings

Princess Ayako of Takamado and Kei Moriya were married today in a Shinto ceremony at the Meiji Jingu Shrine in Tokyo.

The princess wore traditional multi-layered uchiki kimono over raspberry hued hakama (wide silk pleated trousers) with her hair elaborately moulded into a style traditionally worn by Imperial aristocracy. Interestingly, Ayako’s older sister, Noriko Senge, wore a very similar ensemble and had her hair styled in the same traditional style for her wedding, four years ago.

With such a busy past week of royal state visit, we have not had a chance to look at the wedding of Duchess Sophie von Württemberg (eldest daughter of Duke Philipp von Württemberg and Duchess Marie Caroline of Bavaria) and Count Maximilien d’Andigné, which took place at Schloss Tegernsee, one of the residences of the bride’s maternal grandparents, in Bavaria back on October 20th.

The bride’s classic, streamlined gown was borrowed from her paternal grandmother, Diane, Duchess of Württemberg (née Orleans) and features a bateau neck, three quarter length sleeves, belted waist and slim fronted skirt that flows into a full train in the back.  A double veil- one full-length in silk organza and a shorter one in intricate lace (a family heirloom I presume) were anchored by the Württemberg ‘Small’ Diamond Tiara often worn by brides in this family.

The guest list included a number of German royals in some wonderful hats:

Hat From the Past

Royal Hats to thirty-eight years ago yesterday, when Queen Elizabeth wore a vibrant red poppy covered hat by Simone Mirman on a visit to Morocco. I don’t suspect the Queen was as cheery as her hat this day after King Hassan II’s lack of punctuality caused some tension (watch the youtube clip at the bottom!).
