This Week’s Extras

Royal Hats

Queen Margrethe repeated her bright pink hat and suit last Sunday to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Frederiksborg Castle’s Church

Queen Elizabeth also wore a pink hat to church last Sunday- one I think was new! It looks like a variation on a top hat in pink straw with an upcurled brim on one side but we’ll have to wait until its next outing for a better view. You can see glimpses of hats worn by Princess Anne and Autumn Phillips here.

Infanta Elena donned one of her go-to straw fedoras to watch polo with her father earlier this month (Semana)

The Duchesse de Vendôme’s sister, Doña María Magdalena de Tornos y Steinhart, was married last weekend in Vienna Austria to Comte Jean d’Andlau de Cleron d’Haussonville. The bride’s headpiece was noteworthy- before her father’s death in 2013, he gifted her with a necklace from his mother and she creatively incorporated it into her headpiece. One of the hats at the Het Loo Palace exhibition on Princess Beatrix’s millinery appeared on social media this week. It’s such a beautiful colour palate that we don’t often see on royal hats. The exhibition, incidentally, has been extended until the end of October.

Reader Avery identified the hat Princess Stéphanie wore in England earlier this month as the work of Belgian milliner Amelie D’Hooghvorst. Great find, Avery!

Queen Margrethe in familiar hats Thursday and Friday to conclude the second leg of her annual summer cruise.

Millinery designs that turned my head this week included:

Classic and oh-so wearable straw hat from Fabienne Delvigne
Beautiful blue straw boater from Lisa Tan
Fringed natural straw lampshade beach hat from French label Veronica Marucci Chapeaux
Graceful turban headpiece, also from Veronica Marucci Chapeaux, that is greatly warming me to open crowned hats
Floral trimmed pieces from Meg Rafter millinery
And this stunning white straw picture hat with black floral trim from California based Elmira Exclusive Hats

First glimpse of the new Swedish prince yesterday (the announcement of his name and Te Deum service will happen on Monday)

Lots shared by the Danish court this week:

Handsome portrait released by the Danish court of Prince Nikolai for his 18th birthday.
Prince Henrik’s dachshund Tillia recently had puppies. The energetic litter looks to be very popular not only with Prince Frederick & Princess Mary’s four children but with their new dog Grace as well
Getty has a gallery of great photos of the Danish royal family arriving for Prince Nikolai’s birthday dinner on board the royal yacht Dannebrog Tuesday night.
This family portrait (minus Prince Frederick, who was in South Korea on IOC business) was taken to mark the event.

The Belgian king and queen shared this photo yesterday of their children, Princess Elisabeth, Prince Gabriel, Prince Emmanuel and Princess Eleanore, on their first day of school.

Sweet snap shared by the king and queen of Bhutan of their young son, The Gyalsey

Prince Albert and Charlene brought their twins along to Monaco’s annual picnic yesterday.

Hat From the Past

Royal Hats111 years to this photo of a young Princess of Wales (as was the future Queen Mary’s title in 1906) in the most marvellous flower and feather trimmed hat with a young Prince George, her fourth son and future Duke of Kent, catching a ride.

Royal Hatsto August 31,1979 and the christening Prince Carl Philip (whose second son with wife Princess Sofia arrived yesterday on this same date!). Queen Silvia’s peach ringed headpiece with roses made a glamorous statement at the time and inspired several more recent Swedish royal looks.

Reader Guest Post: Stylist For A Day

So pleased to welcome back reader Sandra for Part 2 of her musings about what hats designed by Dutch milliners she’d like to see Queen Máxima wear. I forgot to mention yesterday that Sandra is from Tauranga, New Zealand in the aptly named Bay of Plenty and has read Royal Hats since 2012. She writes, “generally it’s the first website I look at in the morning. Better than the news sites!” Thanks, Sandra! I’m honoured to be part of your morning routine! Sandra’s post today picks up where yesterday’s ended.

5. Eudia (Eveline Gentis-Smits): A young milliner who has had work in Vogue and Elle. Fascinator Lady Amherst is gorgeous and would suit Maxima’s flair. Ditto Paradise Luise and Fascinator Wave.

Eveline even makes a tiara! Here’s her 2-step guide to finding the right hat for your face.

6. Mirjam Nuver: She’s a bit ‘out there’ … but so is our darling Max. I could definitely see Max in the Solitary Ridge wide brim hat in wool felt, purple is one of her colours (and it comes in black), and the Claque B7 wool felt hat.

The Cocktail-Handprinted Navy would take some carrying off (but so does a lobster necklace) and since she seems to like doughnut hats and other oddities, she could try the Full Moon.

I also like this swirled black halo brim hat:

and this red wool hat:

7. Elisabeth Koch: Dutch milliner based in China. The Up+Down Red Felt Brim I could definitely see on Max, and the Orange Swirl.

Ms Koch is designing for a different target market but I have no doubt Max’s vivaciousness could carry off some of these pieces (just don’t let her see the wrap hats). And as we were looking at Princess Margaret’s ‘garden on a head’, how about the Snowball? Or, if someone were to shove me,  the Red Nest (crownless). Have to say the photos on this site are not of the quality one might expect of a showcase.

8. Herma de Jong: ‘Pasja’ (Killer Queens collection) would look magnificent on Max!

I think she’d carry off the brown felt hat with feathers  and even the yellow felt cloche and feathers hat from the Anna Karenina collection (although not in yellow, please – and I didn’t even open the Turbans file).

The ‘Pink Florentin’ with folded brim in the Breakfast at Tiffany’s collection has the sort of drama Max likes and I love what I can see of the pink hat with sweetpeas in Here Comes the Sun Ready-to-Wear collection.

Despite its unlovely name, Caterpillar from the Summerbreeze collection looks very Max, while she already wears variants of the grey felt and sinamay hat (For a Wedding and a Funeral collection).

The green felt and feather hat in The Animals would fit her wardrobe too.

 9. Elmira Exclusive Hats (Russia-born Elmira de Raaf):  The Brown hat includes the sort of animal print Max loves, and the Green cocktail hat has the same vibe. The Edwardian feel of the Burgundy felt hat, plus its deep, luxurious colour, would be great on Max. The website says Elmira has designed for the Dutch Queen (but doesn’t say whether it was Beatrix or Max).

10. Maria Etkind Millinery:  Her collections are very small but having something on the head of the Queen at a high-profile event would undoubtedly be a boost – let’s try Muses from the MG17 Faith collection, or Petal Twist or Blue & Green 3D Waves from the Spring-Summer 17 collection.

Thanks so much to Hat Queen for all work creating this splendid blog that we love so much – and for the delicious opportunity to spend so much enjoyable time down rabbit holes researching this guest post!

Sandra- Thank you for this wonderful post. I think you’ve found an amazing potential collaboration between Queen Máxima  and Herma De Jong. That ‘Pasja’ design would be a knockout on her! There’s something in each of these groups of designs that I think could work really well (some, perhaps, with a few tweaks) on the Dutch queen. Let’s hope she follows some of your suggestions!

Danish Queen Embarks on Annual Summer Cruise

Queen Margrethe set sail yesterday for the second part of her annual summer cruise which will see her spend three days in Bornholm municipality. In a surprise move, she started this second cruise leg with the debut of a new hat!

In white straw, the hat follows a very simple and classic design with a rounded crown and upturned kettle brim, trimmed simply with white braid around the brim and stacked as a hatband. White is one of my least favourite colour on Margrethe but a new hat is always welcome in her oft repeated wardrobe so I’ll take this one without major complaint.
