Danish Royals Observe Flag Day

Crown Prince Frederick and Crown Princess Mary observed the annual Flag Day parade in Copenhagen yesterday. For the occasion, Princess Mary repeated her wide brimmed black straw picture hat with upsweep on one side balanced by a waved brim ruffle on the other.

Prince Joachim and Princess Marie participated in the Engineering Day’s Flag Day for Denmark’s broadcasters at the Skive Kaserne. Princess Marie repeated her navy cuffed calot hat for the event.

Swedish Royals Celebrate New Prince

Yesterday morning, a Te Deum mass was held in the Chapel of the Royal Palace in Stockholm to give thanks for the family’s newest member, Prince Gabriel Carl Walther. The Queen led her family in a lovely pink silk floral suit topped with her white pleated straw calot hat with back bow and net tulle veil. It’s not the most exciting of hat but it paired well with Silvia’s suit and made a lovely emotional connection to the new baby- the hat’s last outing was for the Te Deum following Prince Alexander’s birth in 2016. The Swedish royals have a penchant for personal connections with their sartorial choices and this was another sweet touch from this royal grandmother.

While Crown Princess Victoria and Princess Madeleine both skipped hats for this event, Princess Christina trotted out a favourite- her black silk flower headpiece (affectionately known here as “The Helicopter”). The hat is a zany one, no question, but I must admit that it’s pairing with Christina’s bold, striped dress here is the best match we’ve seen so far. It’s also fantastic to see Christina doing so well following her health crisis… she likely deserves a few passes to wear whatever crazy hats she wishes.
Countess Marianne Bernadotte wore my favourite hat o the day, an ecru straw cocktail design with pillbox base trimmed with a large straw and silk bow curl and a swath of net tulle veil. The jaunty angle she wore the hat is the secret to its success here and the pairing of hairstyle, jewellery, hat and suit is wonderful. There’s been ongoing debate here about mature royals and cocktail hats- I think Marianne’s hat proves that this style, when done right, can work beautifully at any age.

We’ll no doubt see more members of the Swedish royal family in hats for Prince Gabriel’s christening but for now, what do you think of this millinery trio?

Queen Elizabeth Opens Bridge

Yesterday, Queen Elizabeth officially opened Queensferry Crossing, the world’s longest three tower cable stayed bridge, near Edinburgh. For this event, she repeated her familiar blue felt hat trimmed with chrysanthemum feather flowers.

Perhaps more interesting than the hat (if such a thing is possible!!) was the addition of Prince Philip at the event and the bridge itself. This one is a beauty.

Princess Mako Announces Engagement

Princess Mako formally announced her engagement to Mr. Kei Komuro, a lawyer she met  in 2012 while attending International Christian University in Tokyo.  Princess Mako arrived at the Imperial Palace in a pale turquoise calot hat with silk floral trim at the side that she removed for the press conference. It’s a typically demure design that while unexciting, is a lovely colour on the young princess.

The young couple is expected to marry sometime during the autumn of 2018. Princess Mako’s royal status will end with her marriage, although I suspect we’ll still see her from time to time at family events (as we do with her aunt, Sayako Kuroda and cousin, Noriko Senge)

Hat Surprises From British Royals at Braemar Games & Sunday Church

Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh were joined by their two eldest children Saturday for the Braemar Games. For the event, held each year at Fife Memorial Park, the queen repeated her pink felt hat with square crown and short, cartwheel brim. Her gold feather brooch tied wonderfully with the feather trim on her hat!

The millinery surprise at yesterday’s event came from Princess Anne, who decorated her well worn navy felt trilby with the same navy and cream straw figure eight bows and cream feathers as adorned the straw hat she debuted on July 13. I’m not usually a fan of mixing straw and felt on the same design but anything Princess Anne does to jazz up her hats I will fully endorse. Well played, don’t you agree?

Millinery surprises continued today when Queen Elizabeth stepped out for church in a black lace covered hat not seen since it’s single outing during a visit to America in May 2007 (a hat several of you have wished to make another appearance!). The photos aren’t good through a passing car window with Braemar forests casting an olive hue over the piece but it looks just as lovely as it did when we first saw it. Princess Anne repeated her trilby (I think that’s the fastest repeat of a royal hat we’ve ever seen) without the straw decoration.
