Crown Princess Victoria: Green Hats

While green is not a colour I associate strongly with Crown Princess Victoria, there are two headpieces in this hue to be found in her millinery closet:

1.    2.Oct 3, 2017 | Royal Hats

Designers: both are unknown
Introduced: July 2, 2011; Oct 3, 2017

The texture on the seafoam calot is both unique and interesting (I suspect the colour changes with movement) but my favourite here is the dark green ribbon flower piece Victoria added last fall. The darker shade is really lovely on Victoria and the scale and placement of the piece works beautifully with her go-to chignon- it reminds how successfully a small headpiece can bring that little extra bit of presence and pinache to a daytime working royal ensemble. Both of these pieces have only been worn once and I hope we see them repeated.

Crown Princess Victoria: Blue Hats

While we don’t see Crown Princess Victoria wear many hats or headpieces, there are a handful of blue designs to be found in her millinery closet that I thought we’d peek at today:

1.May 30, 2010 | Royal Hats   2.Aug 30, 2014 | Royal Hats

Designers: both are unknown
Introduced: May 30, 2010; August 30, 2014

3.May 17, 2015 in Philip Treacy | Royal Hats   4.Mar 14, 2017 | Royal Hats

Designer: Philip Treacy; unknown
Introduced: May 17, 2015Mar 14, 2017

It’s an eclectic mix of styles we see here – a feathered headpiece, straw fascinator, lavishly trimmed button percher and sleek Garbo. Seeing this quartet together makes me wonder if a less severe hairstyle might aid Victoria’s millinery style, giving more balance to her overall look when she wears a hat?

Swedish Royals Celebrate Lithuanian Independence

Crow Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel were in Vilnius, Lithuania today to participate in celebrations of the country’s centenary anniversary of independence.  Part of the day’s program included raising flags of the three Baltic nations in Daukanto Square and for this, Princess Victoria wore a tall, straight sided bumper hat in black faux fur.

This is not a shape or style we’ve seen on Princess Victoria and it works well with her trademark chignon, the fur collar on her coat and practically, for an outdoor winter event. This piece is a slightly more tailored and streamlined version of the black alpaca fur hat the Duchess of Cambridge wore in Sweden recently and while we will never know if one hat inspired the other, it’s great to see these young royals embracing more traditional hat shapes in a modern way.

Princess Kiko wore a new black felt cloche with diagonal crown wrap on Wednesday to the Japanese Olympic team’s send off to the Pyeong Chang Olympics. While so similar to Queen Elizabeth’s diagonal wrapped crown cloche hats, this one somehow feels much more modern and sleek.

Also on Wednesday, Princess Alexandra wore a black hat with grey faux fur cuff brim for a visit to The Old Moat Garden Centre in Epsom.

Interesting shape on this teardrop saucer with silk rose trim by Jane Taylor
Black leather button with net veil brim and cream leather flowers from Australian brand Jill and Jack Millinery
Two brimless designs from Bundle McLaren with a wonderful feather flourish and green feather overlay
Lavishly trimmed cocktail hat by Australian brand Millinery by Mel proves brown hats aren’t always boring

 Royal Hats

Congratulations to Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank on the announcement of their engagement. While we’ve yet to hear details, this means potentially two major hatted events (in addition to Trooping the Colour and Ascot etc.) for the British Royal Family in 2018. BRING ON THE HATS.

Christening of Prince Gabriel

Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia were joined by family and friends today in the chapel at Drottningholm Palace for the christening of their second son, Prince Gabriel.

Princess Sofia broke with tradition and wore traditional folk dress. Her costume is from Dalarna, the area where she was raised and the duchy of which Prince Gabriel was named Duke at the time of his birth, making the sartorial choice a personal and sentimental one. Her vibrant ensemble included a traditional hand painted/embroidered red cap edged in cotton lace.

Queen Silvia topped a slate blue silk dress and coat with a veiled lace headpiece. The texture and sheen of the headpiece is a beautiful compliment to the streamlined coat and the colour, while muted, looks wonderful on her.

Princess Madeleine, who was named one of Prince Gabriel’s godparents, also made a sentimental touch with her millinery. Her lilac grey twisted silk headpiece with pink silk rose at the back is a clear nod to a similar peach design that Queen Silvia wore on August 31, 1970 for Prince Carl Philip’s baptism (and that Crown Princess Victoria had reinvented in June 2014 for Princess Leonore’s christening). We didn’t get to see the headpiece directly against Madeleine’s printed silk Valentino dress but it looks like it would balance really well.

Crown Princess Victoria topped a stunning red suit with a leather hair bow. At an event where small headpieces reigned, I see the rationale in this choice but I’m not a fan of the twee shape or mismatch of shades between the bow and the suit. My reservations about the hairbow aside, the red suit is divine on Victoria and I adore her brave use of deep maroon accessories with it. And Princess Estelle’s matching maroon Mary Janes? SO adorable.

There have now been six Swedish royal Christenings in the past five years, all of which have seen mostly small headpieces instead of hats. Today followed this trend- what do you think of these designs?
