This Week’s Extras

Royal Hats

Queen Máxima wore a new pillbox covered in brown feathers last weekend to a meeting in Delft about sustainable energy (Royal House of the Netherlands). I missed this in our January new hat finals so if you like this piece, leave a comment and I’ll include it in our February poll.

Queen Elizabeth wore a hat to church last Sunday that has not been seen out since 2007 (see its last outing here). Princess Anne joined her parents for Sunday service in a floppy velvet and tweed hat we’ve seen before as well. (Daily Mail)

One of milliner Stephen Jones’ sketches has been turned into a lovely limited-edition brooch for Brain Tumour Research and Wear A Hat Day (Stephen Jones)

Holyrood House is set to open a landmark exhibition this spring of more than 150 of Queen Elizabeth’s gowns, dresses, coats and hats (Daily Mail). I dearly hope that one of our Edingburgh readers will visit and share their experience with us!

Inventory: Queen Máxima’s Blue Hats

Before January disappears, I want to try and fit in several more blue hat wardrobe inventories. Today, we’re venturing into the depths of Queen Máxima’s closet. As one of the most frequent hat wearing royals around today, you might expect there to be a number of blue hats in Máxima’s history but amazingly, there are just four:

1. 2.Embed from Getty ImagesEmbed from Getty Images
Designers:  both are Fabienne Delvigne
Introduced: February 27, 2007; October 31, 2011

3.June 25, 2013 | Royal Hats   4.

Designers:  both are unknown
Introduced:
June 25; 2013;  November 8, 2013

UPDATE: The Dutch Queen must have heard our call for more blue hats (!), adding several more since this post was originally published.

Designers: J. Crew; Fabienne Delvigne; unknown
Introduced:  Nov 30, 2017; July 2, 2018; Dec 12, 2018

Even with recent additions, I am surprised to find so few pieces on the blue shelf of Máxima’s millinery closet. These designs are varied, certainly, but are less than half of the blue hats worn by both Queen Mathilde and the Countess of Wessex (even the Duchess of Cambridge has considerably more!). I suppose we can only surmise that when it comes to blue, this orange queen is not such a fan.

Your Winners! Best New Royal Hats of 2015

2015 best hat small

After nine polls, ten finalists and more than twenty thousand votes, your favourite new royal hats of 2015 have been named. With no further fanfare, here are the top five winners (jump back to this post for a peek at all the finalists):

#5 Queen Mathilde’s red straw saucer by Fabienne Delvigne worn on June 25 in China

Queen Mathilde, June 25, 2015 in Fabienne Delvigne | Royal Hats

#4     Princess Madeleine of Sweden’s magenta silk flower and ribbon twist headpiece by Philip Treacy worn for the christening of Prince Nicolas on October 11

Princess Madeleine, October 11, 2015 in Philip Treacy | Royal Hats

#3 The Countess of Wessex’s soaring cream straw slice hat with lattice woven ribbon detail by Jane Taylor, worn for Ascot on June 16

And by an incredibly slim winning margin of just twelve votes, your#1  favourite new royal hat of 2015 was Beatrice Borromeo’s natural straw hat with textured mushroom brim of unknown design worn at the christening of Princess Gabriella and Prince Jacques on May 10

It appears, dearest readers, that we have not completely joined in the current trend for cocktail hats but usually favour larger scale, dramatic hats with substantial brims. Thanks to everyone who cast a vote- you can review the detailed results of the poll below. And finally, if anyone can provide any design information about our winning hat, it would be greatly appreciated!

For those of you wondering about the best repeated hat of 2015, I think it’s safe to say that this Jane Taylor design on the Countess of Wessex (which won our Ascot 2015 poll) would likely win. It received far greater positive response than any other hat we saw last year.

Queen Máxima Awards Horticulture Prize

Queen Máxima of the Netherlands was at the Keukenhof Flower Show in Lisse yesterday to  present the 2016 Tuinbouw Ondernemersprijs horticulture award. For this event, she repeated her  large black felt Garbo hat (a hat many of you will recognize as one of your ten finalists for favourite new royal hat of 2015).

Photos yesterday show the grandly sloped brim of this piece and this shape, combined with the large scale, gives this hat such drama. Máxima certainly wears it well.

I can’t help cheekily wondering if this hat’s outing today was a subtle ploy for additional votes in our best new hat of 2015 contest. I love to think that this queen, whose bold millinery style keeps us on our toes and is one of our favourites to watch, is having such fun with us.
