to 56 years ago this year when Queen Elizabeth arrived in Amsterdam in a fur hat with cuff brim for the silver wedding anniversary celebrations of Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard. She and the Duke of Edinburgh were greeted by Crown Princess Beatrix who sported a flower studded net veil headpiece.

3 months later, and I found a color pic of this fur treat! At this point, NOBODY will ever see this post!

Brilliant!
I agree about the odd summery effect of Beatrix’s veil hat – to me it looks ineffective and inelegant when worn with such a heavy coat, especially in the long shots of the video (thanks Matthew). The video does show some very interesting hats worn by the guests – Empress Farah at 1:37 looks spectacular, and I do like the hat worn by HM, also Princess Alexandra’s at 2:59.
It looks very bridal in the footage. And I have to say also very summery.
The hats can be seen in motion in this newsreel footage: https://youtu.be/yOc15IkMnDg — Beatrix just after the 2 minute mark, and HM at 2:45. Beatrix’s hat appears to have a big round bunch of the little flowers right at the top, giving the appearance that she is wearing a skullcap with an attached veil — I’m not very fond of the effect.
Wonderful footage- seeing the hats in motion always gives a better perspective. Thanks for sharing!
I found different angle of both pieces. I this queen Elisabeth’s hat compliments her coat. I am not creamy about the height of the hat.
Queen Juliana’s met, seems to have a big flower on the right, I can’t see it week enough to make up my mind.
Now we know where the Queen got her inspiration for the net things with bows that she’s worn several times to the Chelsea Flower Show!
Great minds think a-like. I was just about to type the same thing.
It’s amazing to think that Beatrix’s hats evolved from a net to a cake! But they both look lovely.
