Day 2: Singapore State Visit to Holland

The second day of the Singapore state visit to the Netherlands saw Queen Máxima joined by President Halimah Yacob and her husband Mohammed Abdullah Alhabshee for a visit to a Horticultural Center in Bleiswijk. For this tiptoe through some lovely tulips, Queen Máxima repeated her chartreuse (or is it more of a pale olive?) green felt design with flat crown and wide, cartwheel brim trimmed with Petersham ribbon brim binding, hatband, and back bow.

Thanks to Dutch royal photographer Patrick van Katwijk, we now have a full view of the back of this hat. While the scale and shape are good on this design, what sets it apart from all other wide brimmed royal hats is the brave and unusual colour- certainly not one many can wear well. The chartreuse hat, purse and shoes don’t directly match with Máxima’s brown and cream hound’s tooth dress but that’s what I like about the ensemble- it the similar palate of neutrals (along with the subtle colours in those fantastic earrings!) coordinate into an interesting mix of shades that make me look closer. It’s unified and balanced while still being interesting.

The first time we saw this hat, it was styled for a different season in a completely different way. What do you think of it on this, its second outing?

Dutch Royals Welcome Singapore State Visit

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima welcomed President of Singapore Halimah Yacob and her husband Mohamed Abdullah Alhabshee this morning at the Royal Palace in Amsterdam for the start of a three-day visit. For this welcome, Queen Máxima repeated her purple felt picture hat with dramatic, sidesweeping brim.

It’s no wonder this hat was named your favourite royal hat in 2014  – the scale and colour are fantastic on Máxima and the upswept brim is beautifully balanced by that gentle wave pleat on the opposite side, a subtle detail that gives wonderful movement to the design. The hat’s pairing with a purple scarf, statement earrings and the same raspberry silk coat we saw her wear for the Austrian state visit last week is regal and bold although I’m less sure about the flowy, high-low hemmed floral dress, which seems an unusually summery choice for this ensemble.

This is the sixth ensemble we’ve seen paired with this hat (see the others at this post)- what do you think of this hat’s outing today in Amsterdam?

Day 2: French State Visit To Belgium

The Belgian king and queen hosted a busy day of engagements for French President and Mrs. Macron yesterday that included stops at an care center for adults with developmental disabilities and a cultural center in  Molenbeek. Queen Mathilde used the occasion to debut a new hat, described by the designer as, “the Marlon headdress which features a set of curves and counter-curves made of violine velvet felt”.

The design looks to be a velvet felt covered bandeau with leaf-like curved shapes that run from side to side, across the back of the head. While this shade of magenta is beautiful on Queen Mathilde and pairs well with her grey ensemble, I’m afraid the design of the hat is a bit clunky- something we’ll have to wait for a better view to assess.

Queen Marks Professional Anniversary

Queen Elizabeth visited the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors yesterday to mark the organization’s 150th anniversary. For this event, she repeated a bright pink hat with straight sided, domed crown and cartwheel brim. The hat is covered in the same vibrant textured wool bouclé as the ensemble’s matching coat and finished with a double folded hatband and a gold and pink rope bow.

The colour certainly makes Her Majesty stand out in a crowd! This hat was a surprise- it has only been seen in public once since its original debut in 2012 (likely commissioned for the Golden Jubilee) for a private church outing so, until yesterday, fell into the “only worn once for a working event” hat category. Also interesting is that this hat replaced an earlier, more traditionally shaped Breton, which originally accompanied this coat. Between the two designs, I like the more angular crown on this design and the creative use of decorative rope- certainly not something we see often on a royal hat. This isn’t my favourite design in the Queen’s millinery closet but it holds its own and it’s a welcome surprise to see it again.

Monaco National Day 2018

Members of Monaco’s royal family gathered yesterday to celebrate their country’s National Holiday. Princess Charlene used the occasion to debut a new hat in black felt with small, domed button crown and wide cartwheel brim. The pyramid shaped design is a style departure for Charlene that pairs well with her graphic coat.

Princess Gabriella sported a sweet cream hair bow on the right side of her head.

Princess Caroline topped her Chanel bouclé suit in a dark teal fedora hat trimmed with a cream lace hatband. The colour is lovely on her but there’s something about the mix of coat, hat and hatband combination that is at odds for me and the ensemble doesn’t draw harmoniously together (and I usually love a fedora!).

Beatrice Casiraghi also wore a headpiece, hers with a looped chocolate velvet bow and long, curved quills that arched over her head. There’s a lovely sense of scale and movement on this design and I adore how the velvet bow links with the chocolate velvet trim on Beatrice’s camel coat.

Princess Alexandra of Hanover also went with a velvet headpiece, hers a layered black bow on a headband base. The bow placement is a bit twee, even for 19-year old Alexandra, but the scale, colour and luxurious sheen of the velvet coordinates well with her bouclé coat. We’ve not seen this young princess in many (or any?) pieces of millinery and I’m looking forward to seeing how she follows the sophisticated style of her mother and older sister.

Princess Stephanie wore a black leather headband while her eldest daughter, Pauline Ducruet, wore a formed black felt  tricorn calot hat with bumper style indented crown. The small hat has a 1940s vibe to it emphasized by the saucy angle Pauline placed it on her head.

Melanie de Massy, daughter of Prince Albert’s first cousin, Baroness Elisabeth-Anne de Massy, repeated her black felt Garbo hat. I suspect Baroness Elisabeth-Anne was also in attendance- as soon as I locate a photograph, I’ll update the post. Feel free to post a link if you’ve spotted her anywhere!
