Princess Beatrix Opens Exhibition

Princess Beatrix made her first appearance since the summer yesterday, opening an exhibition on trees in Dutch paintings at the Dordrechts Museum

For this event, she repeated an emerald straw hat with layered bumper brim, trimmed with side loops. The colour is another festive choice that’s simply lovely on her and the signature scale and shape of this piece is a welcome bit of millinery familiarity during this time when we are seeing so few royal hats.

British Royals Thank Essential Workers

Members of the British Royal Family gathered in the quadrangle of Windsor Castle this evening to thank essential workers for their work in helping others during the coronavirus pandemic, especially now over the Christmas season.

For this event, Queen Elizabeth repeated her red crepe covered cloche hat with teardrop shaped crown trimmed with a double row of the same red and gold braid as adorns the collar of her coat and a side spray of black feathers. While the front point on this teardrop shaped crown is not a shape I find flattering, the red ensemble is so cheery and festive I can’t fault its choice this evening.

The Duchesses of Cornwall and Cambridge, the Princess Royal and the Countess of Wessex appeared without millinery (not surprising as hats are usually worn only during the day) which allowed Her Majesty to stand out further. What do you think of the Queen’s hat today?

Monday Multiples: Princess Anne

Thanks I’m pleased to pass the reigns of Royal Hats to Jimbo today for another in the “Monday Multiples”- a series he first suggested two years ago! Welcome, Jimbo!

Look #1: Princess Anne attended the 2012 Cheltenham Festival in a pale green fedora and wonderfully patterned green and navy coat. She repeated this same combination three times – November 2014 in Ottawa, Canada; Christmas Day 2016; and again to the Cheltenham Festival THIS year, 2020!

Look #2: In April of 2014, the Princess Royal chose a new hat for the coat, this time a large navy hat with a huge feathers adorning it. Note the fabric covering the upper side of the brim.  Now THAT’S a hat!

Royal Hats’ January 6, 2015 post included this hat in a poll which listed the least favourite Royal Hats of 2014. Princess Anne’s exotic chapeau received 119 votes (4.16%); Queen Maxima’s “antennae” fascinator took the 2014 prize with 390 votes!

Thanks for this fun comparison, Jimbo. I’m curious which hat others prefer most with this coat?
