Catching Up… The Dutch Royals

In early September, Queen Máxima paid a working visit to the United States. On September 8 in Austin, Texas, she repeated a white silk dress and open circle hat, tapered around the back to fit the contours of her head, both of which are hand painted by Argentinian artist Pablo Piatti.

On September 9 in Houston, Máxima repeated a textured brown straw bandeau headpiece trimmed with coffee hued silk roses.

On September 14, Queen Máxima attended the HBSC symposium ‘Young in the 21st Century’ in Utrecht. For this event, she repeated a black straw picture hat with upturned “slice” brim.

On September 15, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima spent the day in the Peel region of the Netherlands. For this day out, the Dutch queen repeated a halo bandeau headpiece of pale pink silk roses studded with blush net veil.

On Wednesday, September 20, the Dutch king and queen were joined by Princess Amalia, Prince Constantijn and Princess Laurentien for Prinsjesdag, the opening of parliament in The Hague.

Queen Máxima wore a sculptural beret covered in the same lilac-grey recycled air-mesh/neoprene fabric as her dress and shawl.

Princess Amalia wore her mum’s draped pink abaca calot hat, adorned again with the diamond star brooches that Queen Máxima placed on it the first time she wore it. It’s a lovely colour and face-framing design on Amalia.

Princess Laurentien topped her pale pink crepe cady wrap dress with a headpiece with bow-base in the same fabric and a large blush bloom. The flower is lovely but at close view, the bow lacks the finesse and crisp finish that I think the beautifully tailored gown deserves.

Yesterday, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima began a state visit to Sweden.

For their arrival in Stockholm, Queen Máxima wore a domed brimless hat covered in the same pink silk as her dress, with ruched starburst detail gathered on one side. The hat is topped with a brown dotted net tulle veil.

At first glance, it’s a subtle design that seems charming enough. At closer view, there are some construction issues. We see enough fabric covered hats here at Royal Hats to know that such pieces simply should have as many puckers around the bottom of the hat as this one does.

  1. I’m impressed and amazed Máxima wore some hats while in Texas! Both were good choices and it’s nice to see her in some hats on a visit I wouldn’t have expected to see any.

The black slice hat is beautiful and I love it’s pairing with this dress; it’s a nice contrast/bit of color blocking compared to the beige/natural hats she’s worn with this outfit previously.

Unfortunately I was left underwhelmed by Máxima’s choice of hat for Prinjesdag. I like the percher shape on her, but the matching dress fabric and lack of trim leave me wanting a lot more; and while I like the concept of her outfit, it did feel very heavy for the time of year and in comparison to what Laurentien and Catharina-Amalia wore. Overall I really liked Catharina-Amalia’s ensemble and her first hat was a good start (although not my first choice), made better with the addition of jewelry to it; I also liked her choosing a different color hat from her dress. Laurentien’s outfit and necklace were perfect for her, but her fascinator was kind of underwhelming.

Finally, in concept and at a distance Máxima’s arrival hat for the Swedish state visit is a good choice, but of course the details come back to disappoint (haunt? it is spooky season haha) us. The puckering on the bottom is quite distracting and definitely doesn’t demonstrate couture handiwork, while the veil placement feels a bit haphazard. I will award points for her trying another percher hat and the veil offering a tiny bit of contrast to this very pale beige-pink ensemble.

  2. I love Maxima visiting the USA and wearing hats! I hope she inspires more people in the US to wear hats!!! I love that picture of Max on the boat in Texas with her sunglasses on. You can see the flower on her headpiece well in that pic! It looks lovely! I was pleased to see Amalia wear a headpiece on Prinjesdag! It gives me hope for a few hats in the next generation! I absolutely loved that she put some bling on her hat!!! More of this please!

  3. The first two were so appropriate for warm climate working engagements, especially when Max was likely to be the only hat-wearer. I have a soft spot for the lovely painted dress and matching appliqued hat. Do you suppose we’ll see Max in her cowboy boots?

Amalia looks lovely in her mom’s calot, and cheers to her for embellishing it with the star brooches as her mom did. I think I would have preferred this with her hair up, though, and there was nothing to tie the hat to the dress.

The hat for the Swedish visit is really marred by that puckering. I agree with Jimbo that Max is at her best in deeper colors.

  4. It was very nice seeing Queen Maxima out six times these recent weeks, twice in new hats. However, her radiant smile and “joie de vivre” surpasses all seven hats. As for the last ensemble, yes, the level of workmanship could have been higher, but I think stronger colors suit her better than the pale, blush, dusky pink we sometimes see her wearing, especially at this time of year.
