Italian State Visit to the Netherlands

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima hosted a two-day state visit from the Italian president and his daughter this week. For their arrival on Wednesday, Queen Máxima repeated a charcoal felt brimmed hat with sharply upturned slice brim.

It’s a streamlined look for the Dutch Queen… but not as vibrant as we’re used to seeing her wear. On this occasion, I think the burgundy pillbox worn by Italian first daughter Laura Mattarella stood out a little better.

Yesterday, Queen Máxima topped a camel coat and slate blue dress with a chocolate felt button percher trimmed with striped feathers and a pair of chocolate fur pompoms.

It’s the second new smaller-scale percher we’ve seen Máxima debut in as many weeks, and it’s great to see her experimenting with new shapes.

Thoughts about this pair of hats this week in Italy?

  1. The new small chocolate hat with feathers is a real winner. Elegant and sophisticated, beautifully designed and executed. It also makes clear that Maxima doesn’t need a large hat to make an impact! It suits her superbly. The combination with the blue dress is uncommon but works wonderfully. This is a much more attractive small hat than the one Maxima debuted recently wtih the ruffly flower trim, which looked rather old-fashioned to me.

  2. Agreeing here, both good looks but the chocolate perched with the powder blue is stunning. And she even brought back a familiar gold dress from Princjesdag for the evening too.

  3. I take much delight in both of these looks! The first is classic Máxima, and I’m so happy to see the green and grey finally paired together. While I’m not a huge fan of brown, its use as an accent here for the hat (and the color broken up with the small pheasant feathers) and paired with the powder blue dress is fantastic. Brava!

Also, a shoutout to Laura Mattarella, whose pillbox with the looped bow from their arrival is a repeat from the Italian state visit to Sweden in 2018:

It’s not often we get hats from non-royals during state visits, and I can’t recall there being a repeat in recent years. And we got the privilege of getting a second hat from her as well, which is even rarer. Laura does really suit a pillbox.

  4. I absolutely loved the percher hat on Maxima it really suits her. Her trade mark big brimmed style hat looked great as always too but of the 2 the percher wins hands down!

  5. The charcoal hat comes as no surprise, and Maxima obviously loves it, having worn it now at least 12 times.
HQ, the first photo you posted of Max in the chocolate percher made me gasp! She looks absolutely breath-taking. I agree with trickymum’s comment on the styling and colors; she looks so regal and stately with her head held high.

  6. I really like the brown percher with pheasant feathers. I especially liked the styling with the slate blue and camel, with her multi-stone earrings tying in the different shades beautifully.
