Catching Up with the Swedish Royals

Last Monday, the Swedish royal family celebrated their country’s national holiday. Queen Silvia wore a new hat for the occasion, an ivory silk covered calot trimmed in pearls. The hat is trimmed with a bow around the back.

Later in the day, Queen Silvia joined her daughter and daughter-in-law in folk costume with traditional white cotton folded hats.

We don’t usually cover tiaras here but on Tuesday in the Netherlands, Crown Princess Victoria attended the Swedish Chamber of Commerce gala which celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Swedish Chamber of Commerce in the Netherlands. For this event, she wore her modern Nocturnal Creatures Tiara by Maria Nilsdotter with a green H&M gown. I thought the pairing of these two pieces was inspired.

Dutch Queen Opens Bosshardthuis

Queen Máxima opened the Majoor Bosshardthuis (Major Bosshardt House of the Salvation Army) in Amsterdam yesterday. Major Alida Bosshardt was well-known for a life of dedicated service to vulnerable members of society.

For this visit, Queen Máxima repeated a headpiece of silk flowers in beige-pink and a darker, duskier rose hue studded with beige net veil.

I’ve never entirely embraced the pairing of this headpiece and coral lace dress and the inclusion of coral flower earrings and pearl trimmed necklace take to well into ‘too much’ territory for me. The dress is beautiful, the jewellery is fun and the headpiece has good potential… but not all together.

If you were Queen Máxima’s stylist, what would you suggest as a great pairing for this headpiece?

Belgian Queen Awards Music Prize

Queen Mathilde presided over the award ceremony for the laureates of the Queen Elisabeth Competition for Cello 2022, at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel in Waterloo yesterday. For this event, she repeated her royal blue ruched straw brimless toque hat.

It’s such a great working royal hat, its vibrant colour standing out just enough and its draped design giving interest and movement, all with a small scale that doesn’t feel awkward at an event where no one else is wearing a hat! It’s pairing here with Mathilde’s blue and white Ikat printed dress works so well.

Classic, crisp blue and white is among my favourite colour combinations so this look is right up my alley. What do you think of Queen Mathilde’s ensemble yesterday?  See all the other ensembles she has worn with this hat over at this post.

Over the weekend, Princess Benedikte’s son, Prince Gustav of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg was married to his longtime partner, Carina Axelsson. The couple celebrated a civil ceremony on Friday and a private religious ceremony on Saturday.

For the religious ceremony, Carina wore a lovely silk gown with lace coat by Birgit Hallsten. She topped the look with the Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg Diamond Spike Tiara you can read more about here and an intricately patterned veil you can see below.

We wish the couple sincere congratulations.

This Week’s Extras

On May 15, Princess Akiko of Mikasa attended the scaled down Aoi Matsuri at Kamigamo Shrine in Kyoto in a simple white brimmed hat with ecru ruched hatband.

Last weekend, Crown Princess Kiko wore a black silk hat with mushroom brim for a memorial event. Princess Nobuko wore a bumper hat covered in beige lace with silk pleated trim for an event at Fujita Health University.

The following new millinery designs caught my eye this week (see the comments for more):

Princess Yuriko celebrated her 99th birthday over the weekend!

And there’s always time for one more view of this absolute gem.
