Danish Royals Embark on Second Leg of Summer Cruise

Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik of Denmark arrived in Thyborøn, Western Jutland today for the first visit on the second leg of their annual summer cruise. The Queen repeated her well worn natural straw hat for this visit, adorned with a green band around the crown to match her suit jacket.

Danish Royals Attend Wedding in Northern Ireland

Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark attended the wedding of Irish actress Flora Montgomery and Danish restaurateur Soren Jessen today in Northern Ireland. The Crown Princess topped her exquisite pink lace dress with a headband fascinator of feathers in the same colour.  I think the fascinator looked a little too vaudeville for this finely detailed dress and am not a fan of them together. What do you think?

Spanish Royal Wedding Ten Years On: Two Queens and the Grand Duchess

The May 22, 2004 wedding of the Prince of Asturias and Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano was also attended by the Queen of Denmark, Queens of Jordan and the Grand Duchess of Luxembourg.

Queen Margrethe was her characteristically vibrant self in a red and watermelon pink straw picture hat. Coordinated perfectly to her dress, this hat featured a red straw crown and brim topped with a second brim in light pink dotted with the same red polka dots as were on the Queen Margrethe’s dress. The hat was finished with a pink sash around the crown and large bow on the side. I love the colour (pulling off a pink and red hat is no easy feat), the pretty effect of the double brim and the creative use of those cheeky polka dots on the hat. The whole ensemble was light and lovely for a spring wedding.

Queen Noor of Jordan topped her pale pink and dove grey coat with a simple white headscarf. Queen Rania and Princess Muna, who also attended this wedding, did not wear hats or headpieces.

Grand Duchess Maria Teresa wore a large turquoise straw ‘slice’ hat with high, upturned brim on one side. On its own, this is a lovely hat but it seemed completely unconnected to her teal dress and embroidered jacket. The two shades of blue read so differently that I’m left wondering how this hat could have possibly been created to go with this particular ensemble.

My favourite hat in this lot was clearly the one worn by Queen Margrethe (a hat I wish she would wear again!). What are your thoughts on these hats?

This afternoon, we’ll look at the hats worn by representatives from the remaining reigning royal families in attendance at this wedding.

Queen Margrethe Opens Prison Church

On Monday, Queen Margrethe of Denmark visited the State Prison Renbæk in Skærbæk to officially open the prison’s new church. She repeated her white straw hat with rolled brim, trimmed with white and red polka dot sash to match her dress (not visible in today’s photos, this hat also features a side spray of red and white folded straw circle flowers). On its own, this hat might be a little boring but paired with Margrethe’s vibrant polka dot shirtwaist dress, I think it works very well.

Danish Royal Couple Arrive in Sønderborg

On Saturday, Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik arrived in Sønderborg Harbour aboard the Danish royal yacht ‘Dannebrog’, en route to their summer residence at Gråsten Palace. For their arrival by sea, Prince Henrik donned a suitably nautical cap while Queen Margrethe repeated a red straw hat. The scale of this hat is really good on Margrethe and the square crown and square rolled brim makes it visually interesting. The embroidered ribbon daisy is a sweet and personal touch as well.  It’s a great hat for her, don’t you think?
