Holyroodhouse Garden Party

Queen Elizabeth was joined yesterday by the Princess Royal, the Duke of York and the Earl of Wessx (who is now known in Scotland as the Earl of Forfar) at the Palace of Holyroodhouse for the annual Scottish summer garden party.

The Queen looked very summery her bright coral pink straw hat with hourglass shaped crown and gently sidesweeping brim trimmed with side straw twists and a wide arc of feathers in mixed shades of pink, soft coral and ivory.

Princess Anne repeated the muted teal straw hat with rounded crown and high, sidesweeping brim with bow and feathers she recently debuted at Ascot. Prince Edward wore his very dapper antique silk top hat (while, curiously, the Duke of York carried his).

Dutch Queen Opens Exhibition

Queen Máxima was in Rotterdam this morning to open a children’s exhibition in the Wereld Museum (World Museum). For this event, she repeated a picture hat in transparent wheat gold straw with tall, sidesweeping ‘slice’ brim, simply trimmed with a cuffed hatband in the same straw.

The neutral hat is a good counterpoint for the vibrant green dress and the combined look is light and summery. I mentioned skin tone yesterday and how that contributes to the success of a hat- the warm colour of this hat works better on Queen Máxima than this new hat she recently debuted in cool grey, don’t you think?

Dutch Queen Opens Technical College

Queen Máxima attended the official opening of computer coding college ‘Codam’ in Amsterdam this morning in her warm brown straw picture hat with high upswept brim.

The warm tones of Queen Máxima’s complexion work so well with warm colours such as the brown in this hat and the apricot of this dress. We don’t talk enough here about hat colours flattering skin tones but I think it’s a factor that plays significant part in a hat working well on a particular person.

Mikasa Princess Attends Exhibition With Turkish President

On Sunday, Princess Akiko of Mikasa hosted Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his wife Emine Erdogan at the opening of the Ara Guler Photography Exhibition at the 800-year-old Tofukuji temple in Osaka. For this occasion (which followed last week’s G20 Summit, also in Osaka), Princess Akiko wore a hat that departs from her usual millinery style.

The cream straw hat loosely follows an oversize cloche shape with a few variations- rim at the top of the wider-than-usual crown, upturned kettle brim- and is trimmed with an ice blue hatband that links with Akiko’s dress. What’s notable here, I think, is the large scale. While it does have the slight air of ‘overturned flowerpot’, I’m always happy to see an Imperial princess  experiment with new millinery shapes, scale and trimmings so this gets smile and nod from me.

Queen Attends Sunday Service in Edinburgh

Queen Elizabeth attended Sunday Church service at Canongate Kirk in Edinburgh yesterday morning in a repeated blue straw hat. The hat follows a familiar shape with tall, slightly flared and sloped crown with front indent contrasted with a moderately sized, flat brim. Trimmings include a layered silk hatband in the same pale blue and a spray of handmade silk peony blooms and rose buds in varied shades of pink.

Yesterday’s outing showed a decent view of this ensemble’s pink floral dress, a connection that puts the hat’s pink flowers in context and shows just how perfectly they in. Some of Her Majesty’s hats need to be viewed closeup to appreciate all the detail and while this hat is beautiful at close view, I think it works even better further away, seen in relation to the entire ensemble.
