Royal Ascot 2017 Day 1: Princess Beatrice

Royal Ascot | Royal Hats Princess Beatrice wore a new hat, her first from the Goldust Millinery label. Described by the designer as “made from a blush pink butter soft nappa leather base, this elegant cocktail hat is embellished with a single organza hydrangea flower, ombre dyed to display a burst of vanilla and rose tones. The pretty wire stamens are topped with delicate pink Swarovski crystals reflecting an abundance of light.”  These photos don’t seem to do this hat justice- I’ll update with better ones as soon as they are available.

Trooping the Colour 2017: The Yorks & Wessexes

The York princesses met today’s bright sun and hot temperatures in a pair of cool, pastel hats. Princess Beatrice topped her exquisite ice blue floral coat dress with a sky blue boater hat covered in boucle textured fabric and trimmed with a pleated white hatband and side bow. The bright sun makes it difficult to see how the coat and hat played against each other but one thing is right- the angle Beatrice placed the hat on her head is just right. I would have loved to see a pair of pearl stud earrings to finish off the softly romantic ensemble but that’s a minor detail.

Princess Eugenie also topped a floral dress in a pale aqua sidesweep with short, moulded crown, trimmed with white silk blooms on both sides of the raised brim and striped pheasant feather. While I am happy to see her in another large brimmed piece, I think it’s ill matched with this too-casual cotton sundress. I’d love to see another outing for this hat but paired with a more tailored outfit.

The Earl of Wessex  wore the uniform of the Royal Colonel of The London Scottish Regiment and capt with distincitve black and white feather trim while the Duke of York wore morning dress complete with a gleaming, black silk top hat.

The Countess of Wessex, Lady Louise and Viscount Severn did not attend (no reasons have been publicly announced). That means it’s time for you, dearest readers, to weight in on these hats? What do you think of these pastel designs for the York princesses today?

Buckingham Palace Garden Party

Members of the British Royal Family joined Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh today for the first Buckingham Palace garden party of the season. For this event, the Queen repeated her pale pink boater hat with wide hat band.  In a sea of feathered and flowered millinery, the clean lines of this piece stand out and its simplicity is something I have come to adore. Since this ensemble’s last outing, more buttons have been added to the coat, a change I’m less pleased about. The previous single button closure on the coat allowed much of the dress to show through, providing much needed contrast in pattern and texture against the sleek coat and hat.

The Duchess of Cambridge repeated her pale blue straw saucer hat with raised back and calla lily trim. The scale of this piece, which is a little larger than most of Kate’s other percher hats, is great on her and while the colour is a little bland, the textured straw is a great counterpoint to her satin coat.

Princess Beatrice also wore a boater hat, in navy and white straw. I love the classic feel of this hat but wish she had paired it with a dress that read less “bellhop” than this one does.

Princess Anne repeated her cream straw teardrop shaped percher hat with looped straw bows, silk flowers and white net. It’s a decidedly modern piece for our champion royal hat recycler and while not a perfect match for her beautifully embroidered ivory suit, the ensemble works.

Princess Michael of Kent repeated a straw picture hat with cream brim and long, arrowhead feather contrasting against a tall, domed and straight-sided black crown. The brim on this design is oval (the left extends much further than the right), a feature better visible during its last outing. The classic colour scheme works well for this most modern shape although her myriad of other accessories makes this a look with a LOT going on.

I think this is a strong quintet of hats from the British Royal Family. Which pieces stand out to you most here?
