Day 2: Singapore State Visit to Holland

The second day of the Singapore state visit to the Netherlands saw Queen Máxima joined by President Halimah Yacob and her husband Mohammed Abdullah Alhabshee for a visit to a Horticultural Center in Bleiswijk. For this tiptoe through some lovely tulips, Queen Máxima repeated her chartreuse (or is it more of a pale olive?) green felt design with flat crown and wide, cartwheel brim trimmed with Petersham ribbon brim binding, hatband, and back bow.

Thanks to Dutch royal photographer Patrick van Katwijk, we now have a full view of the back of this hat. While the scale and shape are good on this design, what sets it apart from all other wide brimmed royal hats is the brave and unusual colour- certainly not one many can wear well. The chartreuse hat, purse and shoes don’t directly match with Máxima’s brown and cream hound’s tooth dress but that’s what I like about the ensemble- it the similar palate of neutrals (along with the subtle colours in those fantastic earrings!) coordinate into an interesting mix of shades that make me look closer. It’s unified and balanced while still being interesting.

Dutch Royals Welcome Singapore State Visit

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima welcomed President of Singapore Halimah Yacob and her husband Mohamed Abdullah Alhabshee this morning at the Royal Palace in Amsterdam for the start of a three-day visit. For this welcome, Queen Máxima repeated her purple felt picture hat with dramatic, sidesweeping brim.

It’s no wonder this hat was named your favourite royal hat in 2014  – the scale and colour are fantastic on Máxima and the upswept brim is beautifully balanced by that gentle wave pleat on the opposite side, a subtle detail that gives wonderful movement to the design. The hat’s pairing with a purple scarf, statement earrings and the same raspberry silk coat we saw her wear for the Austrian state visit last week is regal and bold although I’m less sure about the flowy, high-low hemmed floral dress, which seems an unusually summery choice for this ensemble.

Dutch Royals Welcome Austrian Visit

On Wednesday, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima welcomed President of Austria Alexander van der Bellen and his wife Doris Schmidauer for an official visit at Palace Noordeinde in The Hague. For this visit, the Dutch queen repeated her dark cranberry velvet felt hat with wide upswept brim.

There’s not much to say about the hat- by now, I think we can consider this Queen Máxima’s ‘signature’ millinery shape- but the styling of the ensemble is something to discuss. This outfit is all about the yellow feathered necklace, which gives such unexpected contrast against the otherwise cranberry head-to-toe look. Acid yellow costume beaded earrings and a necklace is not what I’d immediately think of to pair with this silk dress and hat but it certainly makes a statement.

Dutch Monarchs Attend Political Farewell

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima visited the Council of State in The Hague today to attend a farewell reception of vice-president Piet Hein Donner. For this, Queen Máxima repeated her grey felt pillbox hat trimmed sparingly with grey ribbon binding around the base and a slim double bow at the side.

It’s a simple hat that suffers a bit from styling choices here- hat and trouser combinations are always tricky (to be fair, this is better than most) and this hat is caught in a battle of prevailing formality between the casual hairstyle and stunning pearl jewelry. The ensemble’s colour palate is good but with the trouser cuffs overtaking the width of the hat, I think the overall balance of the look is off.

Dutch Monarchs Conclude UK State Visit

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima continued the second day of their state visit to Great Britiain today with visits to Downing Street,Pop Brixton in South London and the Thames River where they watched a joint British and Dutch naval demonstration. For this day of events, Queen Máxima gave a nod to her UK hosts, wearing a new hat by London-based Irish milliner Philip Treacy.

In luxurious black felt, the blocked design follows a teardrop shape with deep crease down the middle and is simply trimmed with a single black quill and anchored by two black jeweled beads. The design is all about line and shape – both of which make a major statement even amidst the design’s restrained simplicity and are beautifully highlighted with the wonderful sheen of that velvet fur felt.

On its own, the hat is interesting but combined with this black beaded magenta dress, black accessories (including those sharp drop earrings) and another exquisitely styled chignon, the overall look is magnificent.  Choosing a hat made by the host nation during a state visit is always a lovely touch styling it into a look like this is diplomatic dressing on a whole other level.

The Duke of Kent and Earl and Countess of Wessex accompanied their Dutch visitors for most of today’s events. The Countess of Wessex topped her beautiful embroidered navy dress and jacket with a navy straw pillbox with indented, Pork-pie style crown. The texture of the knotted sisal used on this piece gives lovely dimension to the piece and the retro shape suits Sophie well. We see the Countess in so many brave, bold, modern millinery shapes and styles, it’s nice to see her in something more classic from time to time.
