Royal Hats

Tatiana Santo Domingo’s fair trade fashion line “Muzungu Sisters” showed a collection at Monaco Fashion Week 2017 yesterday. She wore an interesting headpiece from the collection to a related event Thursday night where she was joined by her husband and sisters-in-law Beatrice Borromeo and Princess Alexandra. Bohemian royal tiara, anyone?

King Albert and Queen Paola in casual hats for their recent visit to the Basilica of Avioth in French Lorraine. We’ve not seen Queen Paola much this year following her back injury and it’s great to see her up and around.

Great snap of King Juan Carlos and King Felipe taken yesterday at the 300th anniversary of the Marine Guard Company in Marín. Both kings are former graduates of the naval academy and looked quite dapper in their summer naval whites.

Rachel Trevor Morgan at Epsom today in a very fun, floral trimmed saucer hat of her own design. Vibrant statement hat + impeccably tailored monochrome coat = perfect ensemble for the races

Very interesting interview with Princess Haya bint Al Hussein (Tatler)

Buckingham Palace released this short behind the scenes look at the preparations royal gardeners complete before each Garden Party.

Princess Mako is visiting Bhutan this week- her meeting with the King and Queen yesterday yielded some lovely photographs (traditional dress is always so beautiful) and her vibrant blue outfit to open Japan week made me smile.

Beautiful portraits of Crown Princess Victoria were released yesterday for her upcoming 40th birthday.

And finally, stunning shots of Queen Elizabeth taken this week by royal photographer extraordinaire, Chris Jackson

This Week’s Extras

Before we get into this week’s recap… I have had to moderate more comments than usual over the past week and sadly, was forced to ban two longtime participants. Please review The Comment Policy here at Royal Hats if you’re not familiar with it and my great thanks to the many of you who do a stellar job of keeping the conversation here a respectful one. Now- to the hats!

Spectacular fresh floral crown on Tatiana Santo Domingo and her Muzungu Sisters fashion line partner, Dana Alikhani

Yesterday, the Duchess of Cornwall was at RAF Leeming to celebrate 100 Squadron’s centenary. She repeated her slouchy black wool hat with faux fur trim.

Princess Charlene taking part in the Special Olympics World Winter Games 2017 opening ceremony yesterday in a winter white knit hat. She was also photographed with Prince Albert and a shy Princess Gabriella yesterday at the International Rugby Tournament of Monaco.

Just when we think Stephen Jones has taken millinery as far as it can go, he makes a bejewelled peanut butter sandwich fascinator. Words escape me for this one.

 Royal Hats

British royal photographer Chris Jackson caught this stellar image of the Cambridges in the Musee D’Orsay in Paris yesterday morning. Kate looked great in Chanel and played a strong fashion game all weekend.

The Duchess of Cambridge wasn’t the only one in Chanel yesterday- Princess Caroline and her family hosted the annual Rose Ball in Monaco. They opted for a Chanel parade while Princess Camilla of Bourbon-Two Sicilies predictably went for a showstopper in pink.

Monaco National Day 2016

Monaco’s royal family celebrated their country’s National Day today with a series of events, as per tradition, held at the Monaco Cathedral and at the Royal Palace. It is one of the few events during the year when we see these royals in hats and today did not disappoint.

Princess Charlene wowed in a cream straw pyramid hat trimmed with black straw piping around the crown and brim, a multi looped bow, black leaves and hand made red silk roses. The high contrast scheme is a bold one for Charlene and the shape is unlike anything we have seen her wear before. Charlene’s millinery until this point has had a distinctly modern edge and this very classic design is a surprise that some might find overly sweet for her. I happen to like it- I love the quintessentially French vibe (kudos to British milliner Rachel Trevor Morgan) and adore how Charlene matched her lipstick to the rose trim.

Princess Caroline repeated her tan percher cocktail hat with flat, pillbox shaped base trimmed with a voluminous mass of net veil. Many of you will remember this from the Luxembourg royal wedding four years ago. It’s a fun neutral piece but not one I’m entirely convinced worked with her Chanel suit (I prefer it with the dress she paired it with originally)

Tatiana Santo Domingo Casiraghi topped her red and white (Monaco’s national colours) coat with a domed black straw cocktail. The milliner describes the design saying, “That cocktail hat has a bow with vintage French satin ribbon and a veil, which I think she tucked under for the sake of the conversation!” The simple design is a versatile piece that I think might have worked better placed at a different angle on her head (up and down, over her right eyebrow).

Charlotte Casiraghi also dressed in national colours, topping her ensemble with a red veiled bumper hat. This couture hat is an editorial, high fashion piece and while I’m not a fan of the hat shape, veil around Charlotte’s face and complicated cascadedown the back, it’s certainly a fashion statement with big impact.

Beatrice Borromeo Casiraghi topped her cream dress and coat with a pale grey padded bandeau headpiece. Exciting? Not really. But I think it’s more flattering than the red hat above and that’s worth merit.

Baroness Elisabeth-Anne de Massy (below, center), daughter of the late Princess Antoinette, wore a simple grey felt cloche hat while her daughter Melanie (second photo below, to the right of Charlotte Casiraghi) wore a floppy black variation of a cloche.

National Day in Monaco is always a family affair. It’s lovely to see the little ones passed among their relatives. Note the sweet pink and red hair bows on Princess Gabriella and India Casiraghi.

That wraps up coverage of the festivities in Monaco today. I suspect there will be some strong responses to many of these hats and can’t wait to hear what you all think.

Royal Hats

Excellent coverage of the Prince Mikasa’s funeral over at The Imperial Family Of Japan blog along with detail and photos of related events (enshrinement of the spirit and grave rites after the funeral).

Princess Mako in a smart grey flannel bumper hat on Friday to honour this year’s recipients of the Order of Culture and the Persons of Cultural Merit.

Tatiana Santo Domingo Casiraghi wore an elaborate black feathered headpiece for her brother’s Halloween wedding this week

Prince Louis and Princess Tessy of Luxembourg also shared a photo of their elaborate Halloween headwear. Yesterday, Princess Tessy snapped herself in a cozy winter hat.

Prince Henrik in a dapper fedora enjoying the Hubertus Hunt this weekend with his dachshund and grandchildren (Svenskdam)

The Swedish royal court shared a lovely new portrait of Prince Oscar in a knit cap (don’t miss this side by side comparison of a similar photo taken of his elder sister at about the same age).

News broke this week about a new relationship for Prince Harry. If you read one thing about American actress Meghan Markle, let it be this post on her blog, in her own words. Impressive.

And finally… the much anticipated Netflix series “The Crown” was released this weekend. If you’re able to overlooking some glaring historical inaccuracies (the addition of Wallis Simpson’s presence at the abdication of King Edward VIII, for example), the scale of production is impressive and the costumes are glorious. I’d love to hear what you think of it.

1. Princess Charlene, November 19, 2014 | Royal Hats 2. Princess Caroline, November 19, 2014 | Royal Hats 3. Tatiana Santo Domingo Casiraghi, November 19, 2014 | Royal Hats 4 & 5. Baroness Elisabethe-Anne de Massy and Mélanie-Antoinette Costello de Massy, November 19, 2014 | Royal Hats 6. Princess Charlene, March 8, 2014 | The Royal Hats Blog

*Update: Queen Sofia’s hat, worn on December 12, 2014, has been added to this lineup.
