Favourite Repeated Royal Hat: September & October 2018

With a major royal wedding and numerous state visits this fall, I have been remiss in keeping up with our hat polls. Without further ado, we’re going to jump back a few months and take a second look at the most successful repeated hats we saw in October and November and choose our favourite.

There were seven repeated designs which, based on your comments, received particularly positive feedback; from this group, we now choose a single design to be put forward as a finalist for Readers’ Favourite Repeated Royal Hat of 2018.

Please click on each caption link to jump to original feature posts with additional views, information and discussion on each hat. Here are these seven finalists for October and November, shown in the order they were worn:
1.     2.
Queen Elizabeth’s teal felt hat with kettle brim and velvet leaves by Angela Kelly worn Sep 1 in Scotland
Queen Máxima’s dark green Fabienne Delvigne picture hat with upswept brim worn Oct 5 in Utrecht

3.     4.     5.
Princess Anne’s emerald straw percher with patterned bow worn Oct 12 in Windsor
Queen Máxima’s pleated red silk turban by Fabienne Delvigne worn Oct 16 in Zeeland
Queen Elizabeth’s turquoise hat with black stripe and pink floral trim by Rachel Trevor Morgan worn Oct 19

This poll will remain open until next Sunday, December 23  at midnight GMT. As in the past, each computer or mobile device may vote twice per day for as many hats as you wish. Happy voting!

Dutch Royals Welcome African Leader

On Monday, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima welcomed the President of Cape Verde, Jorge Carlos Fonseca and his wife Lígia Dia, on a visit to Amsterdam. For their official welcome, Queen Máxima wore a new cuffed calot hat in the same sapphire blue wool as her coat.

The vibrant colour is great on Máxima and the punchy combination with her emerald dress and jewels is a good one. The close fitting calot seems to be a complimentary silhouette to the boxy coat- and its the boxy coat that lets the ensemble down, preventing the look from appearing truly polished. Recut the coat and maybe we’ll have something here.

Princess Beatrix Launches Rebranded Help Line

Princess Beatrix unveiled the new name of Sensoor, the national listening help line, at the Dutch Institute for Sound and Vision in Hilversum this morning. For this event, she repeated her silver straw boater hat with stacked navy and silver hatbands, trimmed with a double straw twist at the back. The metallic straw gives the hat a wonderful sparkle and sheen, lending much dimension to the straight lines of the design.

Norwegian Royals Attend Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony

King Harald, Queen Sonja, Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit  attended the annual Nobel Peace Prize ceremony at Oslo City Town Hall yesterday. For this event, Queen Sonja repeated her black brimless hat with pyramid shaped crown trimmed with sequins. The piece is certainly festive paired with her aubergine velvet jacket.
